Musk, Ambergris, & Civet Oils From The 70's
| Does anyone remember these? they were little glass bottles , not roll ons, with , I think, some kind of symbols on them like maybe horoscope type signs. ( I could be wrong about that part)It seems they were made by Dana, I know they weren't Skin Musk by Bonne Bell but in a similar type bottle. The Ambergris also wasn't amber oil either....help! |

Stac,
I have tried to find a store called Zenieth (typo for Zenith?) in Seattle on the web with no luck.
Can you provide any additional info?
I found some civet perfume a couple of years ago that was a synthetic re-creation of the Houbigant/Alyssa Ashley scent of the 70's but that source says the manufacturer discontinued it. Had I known then, I would have bought a ton of it, since I have so little left.
I get compliments every time I wear it.

I kept the bottle forever until the smell was no longer there. Everyone thinks I'm crazy and doesn't know what I'm talking about! Did you ever find it?????

If you are interested in the civet perfume, there are 3 bottles left at the distributor I previously got this from. That's all they have.

These three perfumes were made by Houbigant, now Alyssa Ashley. Of the three the musk is still readily available. They came in oils, sprays, little bottles, etc. Ambergris was discontinued when the whales became an endangered species.
I recently sold a bottle of Ambergris on ebay for $200. No, it cannot be found elsewhere. |

Like many of you, I have been trying for some time to find replacements for the Alyssha Ashley Civet and Ambergris scents.
I've ordered Civet oil from a website called the Dusty Rose Perfumery. Haven't received yet but have read several other blogs that recommend it. They have a copy of the original Civet which is supposed to by very true. I also ordered Ambergris from them. There is another website called The Mystic Corner which sells genuine Ambergris and Civet as well as synthetic oils but they're having some kind of problem and not shipping any orders till April.
If anyone else has ordered from these sites and been disappointed, I'd like to know. |

Yes,I remember these and am trying to no avail to find
The Ambergris scent!
They were made by Alyssa Ashley as the Civet,Musk and Ambergris were part of a trio...(had a little booklet when they were introduced that mentioned the "elements" of earth, fire and water...I had so many complements on the Ambergris when I wore it..wore it through the 80's and still have that
Little black bottle somewhere, scent all gone!!
Would love to know if anyone has had any sucess in finding these!
Still have found nothing in the world like it!

Karen,
I can't tell you anything about Zenieth Supplies since I can't get Google to find it, so I don't know if they carry anything like the civet, ambergris or musk scents this post started with.
The civet perfume I got many months ago was described by the distributor as the chemical equivalent to the Houbigant and Alyssa Ashley product. The civet was engineered rather than coming from the civet cat (they use no animal products), but to my nose smelled close enough that I was happy.
They told me in a recent email that the product was discontinued by the manufacturer, but I don't know who made it. I may have more info in a couple of days. |

Ambergris was always a favourite of mine. I have kept two bottles and have a small amount in one of them. Now and again I will go and have a smell. If I had known then what I know now, I would have bought bottles of it! I bought a bottle of Ambergris off ebay which arrived today but it is not the Alyssa Ashley one, in fact it smelt more like patchaloui oil.
Has anyone tried the sites recommended in the answers, and been lucky? I would love to know.

I,like Paula, have two bottles of the wonderful Ambergris by Alyssa Ashley..it just hasn't been matched anywhere and the perfumer that can come up with a match on that fragrance would make a mint!!
I have tried many Ambergris' fragrances..I have one by Caswell Massey that I purchased in the early eighties and never did get a straight answer from Caswell Massey if it was real or synthetic..it is a bit waxy, with a sweeter smell than the Alyssa Ashley one, but it is nice...not sure how it compares to the current Ambergris that Caswell Massey offers.
I have resigned myself to wearing Musk...my favorites are Alyssa Ashley and The Body Shop's White Musk.
Best of Luck to everyone in the search!
Sandra
P.S. I think it is interesting that the harvesting of ambergris was stopped due to the whales being endangered....one does not have to kill the whale to harvest it, after all, the ball of ambergris is usually found on beaches or floating in the sea...a whale "hairball" so to speak!!
I have a essential oil kit that was made in the seventies with a small bottle of real ambergris...and the info provided with it states that which ever ocean the ambergris comes from influences the scent.
In fact, this is what the note says:
"This natural perfume comes from the might cachalot whales whose home can be in any one of Seven Seas. The best ambergris, however, is said to come from whales in the far Pacific.Richly scented with the sea, it smells of salt and seaweed, and dries into an exciting expression of lasting sweetness. This scent has tremendous staying power and is often added to other perfumes to help them last. Alone, it is the kind of fragrance that people ask questions about. Try it and see. It is predicted by fashion people to become the "in" fragrance for 1974."
Isn't that the truth?? whenever I wore it, it always provoked people to ask "what ARE you wearing"???
And if most of us notice, perfumes today just lack the staying power...probably because of the REAL fixing power of Ambergris is not there anymore! |

Hi,Joan,
I too had contacted Alyssa Ashley about Ambergris, and they acted like I had asked something politically incorrect, gee, just a question, folks!!!
...it is indeed the true ambergris and the truth is that it is not made FROM the Whale but is made from a whale "HAIRBALL"(lol) that is discharged from the whale through the blow hole.
Ambergris is usually found floating on the sea, or found on the beach and is still available...it is a shame that misinformation about how ambergris is gathered has given it a bad name...a whale doesn't need to be killed to gather it...in fact,I have heard that killing a whale does not guarantee that a ball of ambergris will be found!!
I have seen beach gathered ambergris for sale on ebay...and have purchased alot of ambergris oils but NONE can indeed compare with that wonderful Alyssa Ashley Ambergris (and notice that alot of perfumes have lost their staying power without the ambergris)..as I have said, anyone who can duplicate that fragrance will not only have alot of us buying it, but surely they will make a fortune!!

In answer to a question posed about musk in the early 1970's: yes, I remember the three Alyssa Ashley oils, named Musk, Civet and Ambergris, the last of which I used to wear in the early '70's. They came in small, cylindrical glass bottles with a dabbing wand embedded in the cap, and a different black logo for each fragrance. I think "Musk's" bottle was the one with the male and female logos on it. I think musk and civet come from furry mammals, whereas ambergris is found in secretions from whales. I understand all three ingredients have been traditionally used as some kind of ingredient in perfumes, but that only their synthetic forms are used in commercially-produced fragrances now.
I never could stand musk -- I find it smothering and cloying, even if its name does not appear in the fragrance's title.

| In the 1970's, I got a .25 ml. Black glass bottle with screw-cap with a plastic applicator of Alyssa Ashley's Ambergris Oil (Houbigant) ... The most adorable fragrance ever! Men especially would compliment me on the aroma ... Was it a pheroneme? I can't believe so many others are inquiring about this fragrance & why it was discontinued .... Never have I smelled anything comparative to Ambergris by houbigant. I purchased some in the 70's and still have a tiny bit left to which I indulge into and take a whiff just to bring back wonderful memories of those years. Nothing comes close to that smell , a pheremone for sure ! I've received compliments thru the years each time that I've worn it . I also have a small amount of Musk by Dana in a tiny bottle , no other musk scents smells as good either - a certain wildness is in that bottle and will drive one almost crazy -never wanting to go tame again ! - why can't perfumes today be produced that are remotely romantic as these two were. I'd love to find these smells being reproduced and on the market again one day !

Hello Gail & others who are interested in the REAL thing...
Most Musks nowadays are manufactured with 'synthetic' musks, not the REAL musks that were used in the 1970s, such as Musk, Civet & Ambergris, etc. Or they use 'White Musk' which comes from a flower. It is NOT the same...trust me.
Because of all the regulations, these cannot be manufactured in the U.S.A. I have tried very hard to find them for quite a long while...BELIEVE ME.
And I do remember the Houbigant Musks, Coty, Jovan of the 1970s, but NONE could compare to the Original West-Cabot Natural Musk (Modern version is now called Cabot Musk), and an elusive Musk called RH MACY MUSK OIL PERFUME. These musk oils would drive everyone around me insane...Men and Women alike. I have been searching for the original, vintage Musk Oils like those for years.
BUT true Musk Oils are still being manufactured in some parts of Europe, but ESPECIALLY in the Middle Eastern countries, such as Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and even in Morroco, etc. Here you will find the TRUE MUSKS, such as Civet, Ambergris, REAL MUSK, etc. (These are Animal Musks, by the way). These 'Natural' Musks are what give the Musk Oils you remember, that heady, sublime, long-lasting scent of long ago, that you can't find in the United States.
SO, if you're willing to try it, here is a link:

If ye seek, ye shall find! Happy Hunting for these heady and sublime scents of yesteryear!!!

Gee....hasent anyone bothered to read just HOW musk and civit are taken from an animal, and the cruel inhumane painful torture these animales go through having their glands literally scraped for these scents? Im not a peta or an activist freak but someone who deals with herbs and scents for incense and perfumes, and love natural scents but there ARE other natural and synthetic alternatives to civit and musk, I know because I use them in my own blends. Its also against the law in many countries now to use these, ambergis is more leinient as it has to age properly in the ocean before it gives its incredible gift, so killing of whales is guarenteed to give ambergis that is unusable ... There actually is a musk herb used in india that is almost impossible to tell the difference and perfumers are so fine tuned that producing synthetic musk and civit is sop now.
I wouldnt object if these ols came somehow naturally painlessly, but after seeing how they are obtained, could never in good consciouse wear again. No ill will hre, just passing on info. Namaste' Lady Beth |

With all dues and respect, Elizabeth, I really think that you DON'T know what you're talking about!
First of all, as Sandra has SO intelligently and eloquently stated, Whales DON'T have to be killed in order to obtain Ambergris. As for Civet, the extract from the Civet Cat, is an 'excretion', which is harvested during mating season; the Musk Deer, 'drop' their musk or scent pods, and the pods are 'harvested humanely. I have literally seen both of these 'harvests' while on my extensive travels abroad.
Now, I don't doubt, that there are animals that are still being tortured and killed for by-products, etc. That is despicable. But International Law has become very strict in protecting endangered species - ESPECIALLY - the legitimate Perfume Industry - they can face very stiff penalties and fines, amongst other things.
I am NOT against using plant extracts in the use of perfume oils, Perfumes, Fragrances, etc, and I in NO way, dispute the fact that SOME of these are very good, BUT for those of us who have used the REAL thing, we DO know the difference ...So, please DO NOT try to tell us differently.
And while I respect your 'Wholistic' approach to scents, your diatribe is a bit 'preachy and 'judgemental', not to mention disrespectful to those of us who enjoy the REAL DEAL, not artificial ingredients.
If you want to expound a 'Holier Than Thou View, beliefs, and opinions about the 'Injustices of Perfumery and the Perfume World in general, this is NOT the venue for it. And I am VERY much against cruelty to Animals and ANY other living thing, for that matter, BUT, I would strongly suggest that you venture onto a PETA website and please leave this site to those of us who have a great love for the sheer artistry and joy of Perfumery. And if I may be a bit harsh, please do try to use some sort of dictionary when you do write a blog, so that the spelling can be correct.
Good Luck, 'Lady Beth' and NAMASTE (which is the Hindi greeting) to you too, Sunshine!
P.S. It may be SOP (standard operating procedure) to some, but not for most True Perfumers (there are still some out there!), who continue to use the best of ingredients, harvested humanely! NO ILL WILL, on my part, either, Lady Beth...I'm just passing on the info to you, as well! |

Hi Kathy,
As I've addressed in other blogs, that SUBLIME 'RH' was called, RH Mystic Musk, and it was originally put out by RH Macy & Co. I've searched high and low for it, and by the way, it was not Civet, but 'Musk' Oil.
It, so far, has eluded me. I'm still searching after all these years.
Good luck. |

To Caption:
What the HELL is someone like you doing on a Perfume Blog?
First of all, they don't KILL Whales - the Ambergris is a bi-product of their digestive track, which is comes out of the Whales' blow hole and is harvested on the ocean.
The Civet excretion comes from the perineal area, and is very expensive and rare. It is a protected species. The Musk drop the Musk Pods during rutting/mating season, and those are harvested as well - they're not killed anymore.
As far as stinking - I think the ONLY one who's rampant in STENCH and Uneducated arrogance is YOU, Caption. I will say that STINKS SO Much worse than MERDE, which you are!
So, get a life - learn to spell, try and get an education - and use Smegma as a fragrance - it suits you.
And STAY out of this Perfume Blog - it's for those of us who truly appreciate the Art of Perfumery. |

If anyone wants to sell me a piece of real ambergris or tell me where i can find some, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! oasiswg@verizon.net |

| Looking for Alyssa Ashley Civet Oil is what led me to this board (though I am seeing and remembering many fragrances that I had in the past). Nothing like it, I agree, and wonder if I will ever smell that beautiful fragrance again. Has anyone ever petitioned Houbigant to try to replicate this synthetically? I have tried some of the attempted copies made by others. Sorry, it that's just not it! This is the one vintage fragrance that I truly long for. |

| Sorry, I have no information on this specific scent. However, I can offer other possibilities. Fred Soll makes an incense called Honey Amber which is made with natural ambergris. Also, www.profumo.it carries ambergris tincture, ambergris perfume and ambergris infused in sandalwood oil. Caswell-Massey makes a synthetic ambergris, but it smells like the incense I mentioned, and they are America's oldest perfumers; perhaps they know what they are doing. I hope this is some use. Good luck. |

Cindy:
You can buy a really good copy of Civet Oil from The Dusty Rose Perfumery in Portland Oregon. It is called Civet H (copy). I really feel that it is about as close as you will get. I'm sure you know that Houbigant cannot make the fragrance anymore because the Civet is an endangered animal. At Dusty Rose Perfumery they use ingredients like flowers and other non-animal products. I have been VERY happy with their scents. Donna recently made me some scents from an Opium Secret bottle because they no longer make that formula. I was really happy with the three scents that she made up for me. Here is the link below:

Yes, Rosalina,
Our skin IS the largest organ of our body, but People have been 'scenting' it for millennia.
And while you have the Right to your opinion about what People put on their bodies, and you state "ambergris comes from Sperm Whales, Yuck!" Human Pheromones come from the Armpits, Groin area....places on the body where you would also go....YUCK! But these 'Yuck' places - the Pheromones have a function, just as Ambergris, Civet and Musk have a function - to 'fix' or intensify a Scent.
My next question is....WHY are you on a Perfume Blog if you're SO opposed to these 'YUCKY' animal products?
You obviously have not taken into consideration that the People on this Perfume Blog are intelligent enough to know
What they put on their face and body - and they, like you,
Have a Right to their own opinions and choices.
Hasta la Vista, Baby! |

This is to Rosalina:
I read your message and literally laughed my behind off. Do you wash your body in distilled water? You should be quite ripe by my reckoning. Do you eat food (99.9% of which contains every chemical known to man and then some). Do you breathe air or live in a bubble with 100% pure gas content? How can you pass judgement on a 100% natural product when YOUR body already has enough man made chemicals in it to corrode the Eiffel tower? The way I see it, we are all gonna die sometime, and I would much rather go out smelling good than like the inside of the NYC sewer system.
When with closed eyes in autumn's eves of gold
I breathe the burning odours of your breast,
Before my eyes the hills of happy rest
Bathed in the sun's monotonous fires, unfold.
Islands of Lethe where exotic boughs
Bend with their burden of strange fruit bowed down,
Where men are upright, maids have never grown
Unkind, but bear a light upon their brows.
Led by that perfume to these lands of ease,
I see a port where many ships have flown
With sails outwearied of the wandering seas;
While the faint odours from green tamarisks blown,
Float to my soul and in my senses throng,
And mingle vaguely with the sailor's song.

Hooray for the sensible people on here who know the REAL facts about civet, ambergris and musk. No animals are killed, tortured etc. (except possibly in China where there is a large civet population albeit of a different type than in Africa, and with inferior secretions). I have just returned from Ethiopia, where I purchased 2kgs (more than I could afford---god it's expensive) of pure civet musk from a farm there. A civet farm consists of a large wooded area surrounded by an iron bar fence. Civets produce musk during mating season AND when they are excited. They then deposit their musk on the closest object..generally a tree, but they sure seem to love those iron bars during feeding time! The musk is collected from the trees and bars by hand and stored away. These animals are treated very well, and within their confines have no natural enemies.
For those of you who think that civetone (man-made chemical) smells the same as pure civet oil, I challenge you to find a vintage bottle of Chanel #5 (maybe at grandmas) and compare the scent to new Chanel #5.
And finally for those of you who would like a bottle of recreated Houbigant Civet (I have the recipe). Contact me at facets4you@gmail.com and I will post some up on my Etsy account. |

Anthropologists have found ambergris in ruins and digs and it STILL smells like ambergris! For those with the little bottles with no or little oil left, pop off the spray top, fill the bottle half way with water, and put the bottle in SIMMERING (not boiling) water for just a minute or two. The water inside the bottle will pull the ambergris off the inside of the bottle. Cool, and put the water inside the bottle into another clean little vial or bottle. It should smelll as good as the oil itself.
Dab the water on yourself or a cotton ball and you will once again have that gorgeous scent trail with you everywhere.
You can put the cotton ball in potporri or in a sachet, even the spray/cap part in a sachet, the water in a simmering pot, or directly on your skin. Ambergris continues to blossom for decades, and longer! |

Once in a long while, someone is willing to part with it on eBay. I just frantically went into a bidding war for 2 oz of Ambergris by ALYSSA ASHLEY. And it cost me big time! lol
But anyone who can find 1ml of ambergris for under 65 dollars can forget it. Www.capricornslair.com carries pure ambergris oil in three grades, maybe they can help you find civet oil. I thought buying a civet oil gland would do the trick, but it STINKS and BAD! LOL I have it sealed away for a time when I can learn the trick of effectively withdrawing the blissful scent we all covet. I also got some pure civet oil from another site, but again, its in pure form, not distilled into the civet oil we know from ALYSSA ASHLEY.
As you can see, I too have made the effort of endless websearching for the civet oil from the 70s. Good luck and if you DO find it, PLEASE let us know!! |

| Re: Musk, Ambergris, & Civet Oils From The 70 |
Dear Melanie,
1st, it is highly unlikely that you bought a civet "gland". Even if you did manage to somehow do so, you purchased something absolutely worthless, as it is the gland which produces the pure civet musk from which extracts are made. More than likely, you purchased some raw paste, and yes, it is a VERY smelly substance! I have sponsored a farm in Ethiopia for over 5 years for their yearly supply of civet paste, and the product I receive is 100% pure unadulterated civet musk. It is common practice for unscrupulous sellers to "cut" the paste with up to 50% filler material, usually ghee which is a clarified butter. 2nd, as far as the Ashley perfume, this was not a pure form of civet, but rather a mixture of different oils, aromachems and an above normal amount of civet tincture--it was also not originally made by Ashley but by Houbigant. I have the orginal Houbigant formulation and can produce the Civet perfume...but...it will only be a very close approximation as there are so many factors (how old was the civet tincture used, where were the oils sourced from and during what time of the year--organic or not, and who the aromachem manufacturers were). 3rd, if you are under the opinion that you can make the Ashley civet aroma directly from the material you have, then sorry to say, it will not be possible. If you would like a small sample of my Houbigant recreation, civet tincture, or real civet paste with instructions how to make tincture, the email facets4you@gmail.com and I will be happy to help you out.

So right - what made Scents of yesteryear last and last was the FIXATIVES that were used, and they were mostly 'Animalic' such as Ambergris (Whales), Musk (Musk Deer), Civet (Civet Cat), and Castor (Beaver). Of course, these 'Fixatives' also imparted their own characteristics to whatever Fragrance was used.
The 'Animalic' ingredients are still being used in costlier Fragrances today, mostly from Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Africa.
Wish they would be able to develop a Fixative that is just as potent and cost effective and maybe we could have High Quality Fragrances at a fraction of the price they charge today. I miss those Heady Days (and Nights) when Scents were so sublime. |

There is a White musk oil that you can get at a place called "Its Perfume Oil". The store is in Auburn Hills, Michigan at Great Lakes Crossing. You can order it via their website site. I don't have the name of the website but you call the store and get it. Just google "Its Perfume Oil". Its not a Civet or Ambergris oil...but its that same fresh smell. I am unsure as to the other scents, but as for ambergris: As of 2006, raw ambergris fetched approximately US$10 per gram, with much higher prices possible for particularly high-quality samples.[4][5] In the United States, importing, buying, or selling ambergris — including ambergris that had washed ashore — was considered a violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.[6] In 2001 this ruling was overturned, and ambergris was deemed not to be a byproduct of the whaling industry, since the whale expels this substance naturally.
The reason being is that whale vomit or pass it in their feces. It is found in the sea as a solid lump and distilled from it. So research please before you condem everyone who likes animal based scents. Also many are now made by artifical chemical scents made to imitate the natural scent. |

To Clt...thank you, thank you for explaining that ambergris is found naturally floating in the sea!! I have tried to explain this to other people for years and the word needs to get out there that a whale does NOT have to be killed to get ambergris, in fact, what I have read is that it was rarely, if ever, found that way.
It is the best fixative there is, and the perfumes today have suffered for lack of the "REAL" fixatives...(and that is why so many people notice that the older fragrances have more staying power, and the newer ones are more "chemical" smelling.) |

Ambergris is solidified putrescence, if you want to really get technical. It is a by-product of the Whale's intestines, and is usually found floating on the Oceans or the Coasts. |

Hi Sandra,
Thank you for that!
I LOVE the vintage Magie Noire - 'Orientals' are my favorite fragrances - and this one is categorized as a 'Floral Oriental'. It's Beautiful, Deep and Dark (perhaps a bit too intense for a lot of Women) complex fragrance with an 'Animalic' quality to it.
As far as Ambergris is concerned - yes, to both! It is harvested on the Ocean and found on Coasts but still Rare.
Ambergris is definitely NOT banned globally - as far as I know it's banned in The United States - I get mine from an Overseas Supplier. The problem I find with it - is the way they 'cure' it overseas and the fragrance that is added to it - makes it overbearing almost impossible to wear, so I will add a drop or 2 of it to an existing fragrance and wear it that way. I have yet to find a 'Beautiful' Ambergris like Alyssa Ashley's and Houbigant of the 1970s - the fragrance lasted for days and days - it was so beautiful - so sad it's not around anymore.
Good Luck in your search, Ladies, and let us know if you've found a reputable Perfumer/Procurer/Supplier of Ambergris. |

| Hi, try agarscentsbazaar for pure ambergris oil, the white one being the best. And for your info, no whale is killed to acquire ambergris oil. Rather the sperm whale vomits and big lumps are washed up on shores, dry with sunlight and then processed for the final smell. The bad smelling ambergris is from fake or from people who cannot process properly. |

YES!!! I do remember them ...and I have been searching for years. I used to have 2 tiny black tubes of the civet (very musky) and ambergis ( more floral ) I love these scents and would love to see them come back. I have tried other civet oils and they are not even close to the one I had, and received sooo many compliments on. I would love it if I could find them or if the company that made them (I am not sure)
Who it was Houbigant sounds like it. I remember they were black with some kind of design on the cap in gold or white I don't remember. |

Hi, Vickie,
The company who made those was Alyssa Ashley/Houbigant.
Because of the issues with Ambergris in the 80's, they are no longer made..I wrote Alyssa Ashley a few years ago about that and you thought I had said a dirty word!! As you may know, these are "fixatives" for perfume that give it that staying power..the fixatives used today are chemicals. ( I have vintage perfumes and when compared with the newer versions you can tell the difference!).. As I have posted before, Ambergris is a whale's "hairball" and is found on beaches and floating in the ocean. A whale does NOT have to be killed to get ambergris, contrary to what the activists may try and tell us. Try ebay from time to time, I sold my bottles there years ago when I was in a pinch..hated doing it. Best of luck in your search!! |

I've looked all over this site and see nothing about the civet or ambergris oils but I did find them on Dusty Rose site http://dustyroseperfumery.com/pages/perfumery.html
Also you can find both in Italy if you're willing to pay a fortune for it at http://buyandsellambergris.com/index.htm |

I had sent away for some samples from DustyRose Perfumery, and I was really excited about getting the Civet Oil and Ambergris - well, when I finally got it - it was NOTHING like the Houbigant/Alyssa Ashley Civet and Ambergris that I remember from that time.
So, just a word of warning - it's NOT like those of yesteryear, Ladies.
Happy Hunting! |

| My favourite Ambergris Oil was made by Bonne Bell in the 70's. I think they also made a Musk Oil. The bottle was small, flat and round and there was no smell like it ever! I swear if I could get my hands on it I would be in heaven. |

| I remember these so well. There were 3 bottles and my girlfriends and I would wear them intermitantly to school. The black glass bottles were so cool - yeah, there was some sort of symbol. |

| I have a very small amount of light musk made by Glowing Touch which I bought from a small health food store in Hollywood ( which then disappeared ). A middle aged and overweight woman, it was amusing to see handsome young men siding up to me obviously excited --- by this amazing musk! And you ladies are SOOOOO right! Nothing compares to the wonderful scents of yesteryear! |

| Civet oil perfume was made by Alyssa Ashley. I know. I still have a few drops in my bottle. I love it. I have not found it anywhere. I'm still looking. |

| How can I buy these scents? My mother wore them the whole time I was growing up and I would love to purchase them if they are the same. Only if they are the same. |
