Hi Robert,
First of all, the Musks of the '70s had animal based ingredients, such as Musk, Civet and Ambergris, and these ingredients are RARE.
I've been on the lookout for a Musk that I used as a very young girl and grew up with, but so far, it's been quite elusive.
There is still a brand that makes a 'Musk' Oil carries almost the same name. It is called 'Cabot Original, Natural Musk Oil'.
It used to be 'West-Cabot' back in the '70s and back then, it had REAL musk in it.
Here is a link: http://www.cooperlabs.com
Just click on the 'MUSK' Icon
OR, if you're looking for the unusual, I suggest you take a look at this website which sells unusual perfume oils made to order, and I LOVE them! There is a large variety. Here is the link:

Best of Luck! |

Lola,
For a cheap price of less than 12.00 for Cabot Musk - that's not much to gamble on. And besides, if you're trying to smell it from the bottle, you'll smell almost nothing - it reacts when you put it on the skin! The West-Cabot Musk they made in the 1970s was the REAL thing - it was one of the most beautiful musks ever made, but for now, one has to settle for lesser musks.
But there are sites, like I've mentioned before, that ARE worth checking out, such as Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, which make exquisite Perfume Oils that last! But they're not true Musk.
Good Luck |

| Re: MUSK OIL- RH MYSTIC MUSK OIL |
Hi Gypsy,
The Musk you're referring to is called: RH Mystic Musk - and I've been looking for it for years and years.
It is the MOST SUBLIME Fragrance that I have ever worn - there is NOTHING like it - no matter how exclusive or expensive the perfume, can't hold a candle to RH Mystic Musk.
I've been able to track down everything EXCEPT for
RH Mystic Musk - NO ONE KNOWS what happened to it - and there is not ONE BOTTLE that I've been able to get a hold of.
Good Luck, |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
Lola, I do agree with you, everybody's chemistry does react differently. Cabot Musk is NO longer like the original West-Cabot, and no longer contains animal musk as its prime ingredient, but I do still get some compliments whenever I use it.
But like everything else in this world, it's up to the individual. |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
HI, I WROTE ON YOUR MESSAGE BOARD ON AUG 8, 2007 AND I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE LOOKING FOR THIS SPECIAL OIL. THE ORIGINAL BOTTLE FROM THE 70'S WAS CLEAR GLASS WITH A BLACK CAP. THERE WAS SOMETHING WRITTEN IN THE BACK OF THE BOTTLE THAT READ SOMETHING LIKE THIS; this strange, haunting, mysterious fragance..so and so....
I BOUGHT ONE FROM CABOT BUT I DID NOT LIKE THE WAY IT SMELLED. I'VE BEEN USING JOVAN MUSK FROM WALGREENS AND ALYSHA ASSLEY...BUT I ORDERED ONE LAST MONTH SPECIFYING THAT I WANTED A REAL DEER MUSK OIL. IN THIS CASE THE ANIMAL IS NOT BEING KILLED; THEY TAKE THE GLAND THAT PRODUCES THE MUSK FRAGANCE FROM THE DEER BODY BY REMOVING IT, BUT NOT KILLING THE DEER. ITS FROM SINGAPORE...FOR $12.00 INCLUDING SHIPPING. ITS A FRESH, POWDERY FRAGANCE THAT LAST, IT'S A DEEP FRAGANCE, BUT NOT THE SAME AS THE ONE FROM THE 70'S. NOW I WILL TRY THE ONE SOME PERSONS ARE RECOMMENDING, K MUSC KUBLAI KHAN BY SEIGE-LUTENS JUST TO TRY...IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS SEARCH..LET'S KEEP ON TRYING...MAYBE WE CAN FIND IT IN SOME COUNTRIES WERE THERE ARE MUSKY DEERS. SO LET'S TRY HIMALAYANS MUSK DEER, ASIA MUSK DEER, CHINA, SINGAPORE..THE SITE WHERE I BOUGHT THE LATEST ONE WAS...ebay.com.sgMUSKWilddeer musk oil fragance.GOOD LUCK TO MY MUSKY FAMILY..
GOD BLESS YOU ALL, AGNES |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
Hi Agnes,
I think I've bought the REAL Deer Musk from the same Merchant on eBay you're talking about. I'm not really happy with the Musk, and don't wear it all that often. It would have been better if he had sold it by itself without ANY fragrance or in a neutral oil.
The Deer Musk itself, is the FIXATIVE - which makes the Fragrance LINGER for a very long time - the Fragrance, is another story.
My Mother was in the Perfume Industry, and she more or less passed down all her knowlege of Perfumery to me. It's a tricky thing, because in this Country (U.S.A), Deer Musk, Civet, Ambergris is not generally used in fragrances anymore - because of all the conservation laws/import, etc. But you can get it from Foreign sources, like you've said.
You are SO right - the timid little Deer is NO longer killed. Its Musk Pods are harvested when they 'drop' them and used - and they're EXPENSIVE and rare. The Civet is even MORE rare, and its secretions are taken during mating season. Ambergris is a digestive product of Whales, which is 'spewed' out of their Blow-holes and harvested either on the seas/oceans or found on beaches.
Hope all of us find the Fragrances we love!
All the best, |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
My opinion only, there were 2 basic Musk fragrances from the 70's that I was familiar with. One was the fragrance of Coty's Wild Musk or Bonne Bell's Skin Musk, and the other was the fragrance of Jovan's or Alyssa Ashley's Musk.
I have purchased the recent reissue of Jovan's Musk oil and although not as deep as the 70's version, I think it is very close for being a synthetic.
I just bought an 1/8 oz. Vial of vintage Jovan Musk Oil off ebay today. I am going to compare the new with the old and see if it is my imagination or if there is much difference. |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
The ONLY one I've found that comes remotely close in scent is from THE BODY SHOP - "white musk". The "original musk" made by Cabot loses it's aroma tooooo soon.
Soooo glad you didn't ask about Patchouly !!!!! lol |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
Hi Jo,
You are SO right - Cabot Original Natural Musk - has barely a discernible scent, even when it's on someone else. It is a mere shadow of its former self when it used to be called:
West-Cabot Original Natural Musk - that one was sublime.
I haven't tried the White Musk by The Body Shop, but it's worth a try.
All the best, |

Hi Ligeia!
Just wanted to thank both you and Donna for suggesting Kiehl's Original Musk Oil. I've been wearing that and liking it very much! It has a tad of patchouli which is not always discernable, but I got a whiff of it today in the car. It has a very nice deep, rich dry down.

| Re: MUSK OIL |
There are several Oil retailers in NYC that have different types of Musk such as , Egyptian or Tunisian Musk oil.
I have used them and they are great. The 2 companies are Exotic Fragrances and Gold Star Fragrances. Both have websites. They sell many different scents and they are long lasting. The longer you have them, the more concentrated the scent becomes.
Hope this helps. |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
I too have been searching for the musk from the 70's...it's doesn't exist anymore. The very closest I've come to this fabulous scent is from the Body Shop, "White Musk".......It's the same scent but not as concentrated as the one from the 70's.....I do get stopped occassionaly by people asking what that beautiful fragrance is. In any event, if anyone out there does find the original from deer pheramones, PLEASE email me.
P.S. Cabots is a waste of money, and doesn't even come close to the "White Musk" from the Body Shop. |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
| I've used Cabot but I didn't like it. However, I bought Jovan Musk Oil in Walgreens and it really lasts. Naked Musk is also soft and lasts. Jovan price is about $l3.00 and the Naked Musk is about 4.00. Both are cheap but are much better than any other musk. So, dont wait and get one of these musk..I know you will like them..Good Luck!!!! |

| Just wondering, did you ever find this musk? I used to buy a musk oil that came in a somewhat square bottle with a black top in the 1970's called Strange, Haunting, Mysterious. It was at Bergner Weise Department Store in Rockford, IL. And then it disappeared out of my life. I would LOVE to find it again. |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
Hello Nijole,
The Musk Oil you're referring to that said 'Strange, Haunting, Mysterious', is called RH MYSTIC MUSK OIL. It was SUBLIME.
It has been discontinued and no longer availabLe. The other Musk Oil that was also sublime in a different way was called
WEST-CABOT The Original, Natural Musk Oil. They still make it but without the NATURAL MUSK in it. It is now called:
Natural Musk and it is distributed by COOPER LABS. You can find it most anywhere or call COOPER LABS:
Order Online or Call toll free 1-800-645-5048
This Musk Oil by Cooper Labs is NO longer sublime - you can barely detect it on you, and neither can most people. But some people like it.
Good Luck |

Hi Elizabeth,
As you've read in the above Posts - KIEHL"S MUSK is the one you're referring to which has been around for a very long time but no longer has animal musks in it as far as I know.
You can purchase that from KIEHL'S in New York City - they have a Website.
All the Best! |

| Re: MUSK OIL - West Cabot's / Cooperlabs |
| This Original Musk sold by Cooperlabs (Cabot, West Cabot's, etc) is still an all time favorite. Smells great to me - some people age and they lose some of their olfactory senses, it's an unfortunate art of life. And besides, Musk does, and always has, worked with your own body chemistry. It's an OIL not an alcohol based perfume. |

| Re: MUSK OIL |
While it's true that 'THE ORIGINAL, NATURAL MUSK OIL' is made by Cooperlabs - it was originally put out by West-Cabot Labs on Long Island, New York - it is NOT the Original Musk Oil that was made in the 1970's since it no longer has any Animal Musk products in it - THEREFORE, it does NOT smell the same. It has a pleasant, albeit mild scent that is LIGHT YEARS away from what is was in the '70s. The ONLY thing is that the price is moderate - anywhere from $10.99 - 14.99, depending on where you buy it...and that's about it.
So, don't let anybody convince those of you who are Savvy that it's the same Heady, Sublime Musk Oil of the 1970s - it's NOT - MORE'S THE PITY.
Happy Hunting & Happy Holidays To Lovers of Fragrance! |

Mina |

| I always seem to be on the late frieght when I get around to the message board,anyway...I wonder if anyone has ever used the Musk oil that came in a small dark bottle. It was called just "MuskOil" By Coty. Sometimes, it seemed to be too strong but I loved that smell, and it did have it own scent that worked with your body chemistry. I haven't been able to locate it for years. |
