R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL

I am from Puerto Rico and I belong to the muskmania group of the 70s. I don't give up in my search. I ordered it from Cooper Labs but I did not smell anything that was like R.H. MYSTIC MUSK OIL. However, in the meantime (I still hope someone could help us find the nearest fragance and lasting musk) I use Jovan Musk from Walgreens ($13.95). Or Bettina Musk also from Walgreens. The enchanting, mysterious, haunting, lovely, sexy, exotic, unique, heavenly, adorable, and all the atributes that can describe this R.H. MYSTIC MUSK still arouses our senses, just by pronouncing the word M U S K..... Good Luck in your search and please share
Your findings....our treasure....MUSK. BLESSINGS TO ALL.
Your musky friend, AGNES...

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
I have a bottle of R H Mystic Musk oil. It is like no other musk oil that I have ever had. Every time I used to wear it, I could sense people getting closer to get a whiff. Some would ask me what I was wearing. I've had it for years, and it gets better and better. I don't use it often because I can't find it anywhere. I bought it back in the 70's. It used to come in a small clear bottle with a black top and white label with black writing. The last bottle I bought was in plastic. The label fell off years ago, and I don't remember what it looked like. I have about enough to fill a mini bottle of perfume.

I bought Jovan white musk, and that's nice, but nothing compares to RH Mystic Musk Oil

Let me know if this is the one you've been looking for.
If you're still interested, E-mail me and in the mean time, I will see if I can find it. I will get in touch with a friend of mine that used to use ti also, and see what happens

Hi Marilyn, as I've said MANY times on this blog, RH Mystic Musk Oil, has been my HOLY GRAIL - there is NOTHING that smells like it or can even hold a candle to it, THEN and NOW.

It used to come in a clear bottle with a white-pearlized label with figures of a man and woman kissing/dancing and drawn in a Magenta/hot pink ink. I even remember the copy-written in black ink.

If there's ANY way you can get a bottle(s), PLEASE let me know. I've been looking for that for years.

I think the manufacturer was either RH Macy or Saxony, can't remember which. But in any case, PLEASE let me know.

Thank you,

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Oh Boy, Agnes!!! Donna and I, and a quite a few others have been searching high and low for a truly sublime Musk Oil, unfortunately there is NONE like R & H Mystic Musk - that is SHEER PERFECTION.

I have tried JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING to try and locate 1 bottle, but to no avail. WOW!!! I'm really stumped! No one seems to have it, so I just keep doing search after search...maybe something will turn up, hopefully.

As for Cabot Original, Natural Musk - it's not bad, but it's not like it used to be...it was once called West-Cabot and it was sublime, but now it's just a diluted watered down version, with just a hint of the 'greatness' of the original. Oh well...

Let's just keep trying and keep others informed. Thank you for your post!!!

Best of luck!

Hi Vinny,

Like I've said MANY times in this blog, RH Mystic Musk Oil, is my HOLY GRAIL. NO SCENT comes close to that. That is UNADULTERATED PERFECTION. I can't even begin to describe what that Musk Oil does to you and to people around you.
All I can say is that it's HAUNTING, MYSTERIOUS, HYPNOTIC, MAGNETIC, VERY SENSUAL AND HIGHLY ADDICTIVE.

OH SO SUBLIME!!!!!! Wish the Manufacturer reads this Blog and comes forward and starts making this AMAZING Musk Oil once again. That would be HEAVEN!!

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Hello Sal,

I would definitely be interested. But ever since I've started my Diatribe on RH Mystic Musk, I've noticed that those individuals who do have that very rare find, have increased their prices EXPONENTIALLY, where before, they could ONLY get a few dollars for it.

When I used to buy it in the '70s, it was one of the cheapest Musk Oils around. But although I do believe in Supply and Demand - Greed should not be included in this mix.

I would be interested in biddling as long as it's a Fair Price. Although I don't mind paying more, I certainly will not pay an exhorbitant price no matter how much I LOVE something.

Please let me know the information.

Thank you,

I did a search and discovered R.H. Cosmetics Corp had several lawsuits against them and eventually went out of business. I am sorry to say that the original RH Mystic Musk OIl from R.H. Cosmetics Corp., Dept. 78, Rugby Station, NY 11203 is not longer available. I too loved the scent and was the ONE I was NOT allergic to.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Please be careful and make sure to get an updated digital picture because if the oil has turned brown from age the scent has changed and it is not good. I had one bottle left in my safe and it eventually changed from clear to a light brownish color and I had to throw it away. So, please be careful. I should have kept it in my refrigerator but did not. Good luck.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Actually - No Musk contains real musk oil, from the musk deer. It has not been deer oil for ever. The musk deer is endangered and I would venture to say the ALL musk oil is synthetic.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
HI MUSKMANIA FRIENDS....
You can read my previous post dated 8-8-07 so that I dont have to repeat what I wrote before. Let me tell you something really interesting. There are laws that protects animals; therefore, we won't be able to find the real musk we used in the 70's. It was extracted from a deer gland, and in order to do so, men had to kill deer because these gland is just found in males...So imagine, in order to get the musk from these glands, a lot a deer were killed and then they chose the male to extract the gland from the pouch. This
Substance is used in the making of medicines. It is used as a sedative, and other useful preparations for heart, lungs etc.
A change was made in the manufacturing of musk perfume;
A synthetic one had to be used in order to keep the product and obey the laws. That's why we cannot find the real one;
Remember, the other one was made with a secretion of a male deer that seducted the female with a drop of this secretion mixed with its orine...and the female, of course,
''fell in his arms'' I mean, in his legs...
There is a musk that is real cheap but smells delicious, mmm!!!!, clean, sexy, provocative, sweet, powdery, attractive, seductive; it has many of the characteristics of our R.H. Mystic Musk Oil...It's name...Naked Musk. You can buy it at:Amerimark, also at Beauty Boutique, at Cosmetics
Sollutions. The price...$3.99 or $4.99. Jovan Oil is also acceptable...So sorry....Love, Agnes

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
First of all, Yes, it's true - American so-called 'Musks' do NOT contain REAL Deer Musk - it is mostly synthetic - either from Plants, Flowers, Chemicals, etc. REAL MUSK was supposedly outlawed here in the United States - since the Deer Musk is a protected species. Because it was extracted from the Musk Pods of the Male Deer Musk, and at that time - they killed the Musk Deer to get these Pods from the Male. The Pod is then opened and the 'seeds' are extracted and sold to Perfume Manufactures all over the World. Although, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO KILL THE MUSK DEER - there are places that are breeding Musk Deer and the Pods are harvested humanely without killing the Deer-their Pods are 'dropped'--Poachers impatient on cashing in on the very lucrative Perfume Industry - are an enormous problem and STILL KILL the wild Musk Deer, ESPECIALLY IN PLACES LIKE RUSSIA, CHINA, TIBET AND MONGOLIA, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, etc.

AGAIN, ALL Musk- nowadasy is NOT synthetic - it is STILL widely used throughout Europe - especially France, the Middle and Far East and Africa, amongst many, which STILL export the Musk Pods to the Perfume Industry for a hefty price.

And *CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, MUSK IS STILL READILY AVAILABLE FROM OVERSEAS*. That's just the way it is.
What makes Musk SO lucrative is that is an absolutely amazing FIXATIVE - in other words - it really 'HOLDS' the Fragrance and intensifies it to an amazing degree, as anyone who has used any of the Animalic Musk, Civet, Ambergris, etc, can testify.

So, that's basically the story. It is a pity, that somehow, some Genius Rogue Chemist hasn't come up with a comparative FIXATIVE that copies almost exactly the Musks, Civets, etc. And if it works, it would stop the needless slaughter by Poachers of these creatures.

And I have tried AMICA NAKED MUSK - but it still doesn't have the qualities of the ABSOLUTELY SUBLIME original RH MYSTIC MUSK or the Heavenly WEST-CABOT ORIGINAL NATURAL MUSK.

For me, the one of the few of the synthetic Musks that comes slightly close and has been around a very long time
Is: KIEHLS MUSK. I can't believe the staying power of this one - but it's NOT for everyone - it's Dark & Resiny and the top note is PURELY ANIMALIC, but then it gives way to a sweet scent without being cloying and the SILLAGE (The trail of Scent) it leaves in your passing, drives People to the point of overwhelming madness - now, to me, that's the mark of a truly great Fragrance - it's ability to:
*****Mystify, Bewitch, Haunt, Hypnotize & Enrapture*****
And isn't what this Blog is all about? The Mystique that some Fragrances/Scents have, that draw People to it like a Magnet draws Iron....Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Hey Lighthearted,

Oh, I KNOW what you mean about a scent changing or turning. Which is one of the main reasons why I don't want to pay a top price for it because when I ask the Seller how the scent is holding up - 9 times out of 10, they'll give me a vague answer or tell me that the fragrance/Oil, etc is just fine, and then I'll end up stuck with a non-usable item because The Buyer won't take Returns, and a 'War' ensues.

So, when I'm interested in a vintage fragrance and the Buyer gives me a vague answer or I have ANY suspicion that they're not on the level - I DON'T BUY.

I don't know if I'd store fragrances in the fridge, when you consider that the Fridge light is always going on several times during the day - that would defeat the purpose of storing the item there in the first place. What I do, is put it in a dark, cool place, such as an out of the way drawer, etc, and I find that, that usually does the trick and the fragrance maintains its integrity.

OK Logan,

But are you referring to the ORIGINAL WEST-CABOT MUSK or the current CABOT Musk which NO longer has real Musk Oil in it. The Original West-Cabot Musk was indeed amazing and sublime...I know, I used it all the time until it was discontinued
In its original form and is now Cabot Original Natural Musk Oil, and I still use it, but it is a mere shadow of its former self.
And as gorgeous as West-Cabot Musk was, it still couldn't hold a candle to RH Mystic Musk.

His ebay store:

The feedback in the ebay is 98% positive :)

His offical website:

Hello Kalipha,

Yes, I have ordered Musk Oil from ham_firl on eBay, and I have been very disappointed. It is AWFUL - the fragrance they add to the Musk is ABOMINABLE and practically unwearable - although I have tried. So I'm stuck with 2 unwearable fragrances...NOT GOOD!
UNLESS you're adventurous, I would suggest that you stick with the Sandalwood.

Whatever you decide, Good Luck!

And as much as I LOVE RH Mystic Musk - which I have been looking for years, I'm not about to shell out $150.00 - sight unseen and unsniffed to an unknown seller on eBay. Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
I love musks as well, but I was a child of the 80s so never got to experience the 70s musks that people wax poetic about. I purchased a vintage, 1970s era sample set of Jovan fragrances off ebay several months ago and one of the 10 vials was their original Musk Oil. It was really nice - very similar to their modern day musk oil, but slightly smoother, softer, more billowy and less harsh and in your face. But as I said, still very similar to today's version. I like Kiehl's musk oil a lot, it is a somewhat raunchy musk with some sweet floral notes added. But my favorite musk oil, and the one that garners the most compliments for me, is Arabian Musk oil by Kuumba Made. It is subtle and elusive in the same manner as modern Cooperlabs Original Musk Oil (formerly called Cabot), and in fact the scents of the two are very similar. What I like most about Arabian Musk Oil is that it doesn't have all sorts of floral...or amber...or patchouli, etc. Notes like many other musk oils. It's basic, subtle, and stunning. If you live near a Whole Foods or another health food store that carries Kuumba Made fragrance oils, do check out their Arabian Musk. I am so curious to try the RH Mystic Musk that you all are so crazy about. If anyone would be interested in selling me a tiny sample (like a quarter ml.) I would be willing to buy it for a fair price. If you're willing, just post here with your email. Thank you and take care everyone! Fragrant musk dreams to all. :)

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Hi Tourmaline,

I do have to agree with you on Kiehl's Musk Oil - it's NOT for everybody - it's got an 'Animalic' Scent to it whch adapts to your unique chemistry- but right now, it's my favorite. I've had Men and Women follow me to ask me what it is that I'm wearing. As for CooperLabs - they bought out or took over what used to be the Original 'WEST-CABOT' Original, Natural Musk Oil from the 1970s, which was made on Long Island, New York, and was SUBLIME but not as SUBLIME as RH MYSTIC MUSK.

RH MYSTIC Musk is EXCEEDINGLY RARE, if not altogether extinct. I've been looking for a a viable sample for years, and now they've jacked up the price exponentially since people have been reading this blog. So, if you do find it, be prepared to pay a HEFTY price and you also run the risk of it not being like it was back in the 70s - because it was made with REAL MUSK and it has a limited shelf life.

In any case, Good Luck.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
AGNES - as I've said MANY times on this Blog - the Musk Male Deer do not have to be killed in order to 'extract' the Musk from the glands - the Male deer 'drop' the pods and that's where the Musk is extracted from. There are World regions in which these Musk Deer may still be killed such as parts of China and Russia where they roam free, etc, but like you said, they are a Protected Species and most Perfumers keep within The Perfume Industry Guidelines and International Trading Laws.

Musk can still be obtained throughtout Europe, the Middle East, The Far East and Russia. In France, Musk is still used in top of the line Perfumes. Sorry to burst your bubble - but that's the way it is.

They now have breeding farms in which the Deer are humanely treated and during ruttng season, the Pods - when they are dropped, are harvested.

Due to the International Law and World Treaty For The Protection of Certain Species - there are many Regulations in place, of course, there are a few Countries that refuse to join this Global Regulatory Agency.

I can list a number of places that sell REAL Musk but that doesn't necessarily mean that the fragrance is nice, as I've found out in my travels. One of these places that sells their Animalic Extracts, amongst others - here is the link:

I hope that finally clears up this Musk dilemma. Ladies, Musk can STILL be obtained, it just won't, unfortunately, be the same Lovely fragrance which was everywhere in the 1970s and that you could buy for a few dollars.

To all Lovers of Musk, Civet - wish you all Lovely Scented Days and Nights.

All the Best,

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
I have been looking for musk as well and found this thread.

I have been researching musk and the truth behind the way it is harvested. "Since obtaining the deer musk requires killing the endangered animal, nearly all musk fragrance used in perfumery today is synthetic, sometimes called "white musk". "

The guy on eBay that says it drops pods is trying to sell his products and is not telling the truth, since the musk oil is obtained from a gland of the male musk deer, which is situated between its back/rectal area. It must be killed to remove it, unless they are doing with the deer what they have been doing with bears to get the galbladder bile. Cruelty.
I would rather get a nice smelling synthetic oil with the kowledge that no animal had to suffer for me to smell nice.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Hello Woof,

I see you have not been reading the Posts on this Thread about Musk Oil.

I do hate to break your Research Bubble, but I have travelled extensively and have seen Musk Pods being harvested. They now have Farms or Preserves in which the Male Musk Deer - since it is on the Endangered List, where they only collect the Musk Pods after the Male Musk Deer has dropped them. The Deer are not harmed. Although I cannot speak for certain countries, which do not consider Preserves cost effective, such as in Tibet - Asia, and in parts of Russia.

Contrary to your Research, Genuine Musk is still being used widely in European Perfumery - in high-end Perfumes, and throughout the Middle East, Africa, etc.

It would be of great help to you, if you travelled and seen this first hand, which you, obviously, have not.

I am still quite perplexed as to why your Ilk on are this Perfume Blog. This Thread was started by Genuine Musk Oil Lovers, because, to this day, the very characteristics and nature of genuine Musk create a fragrance is in, in my opinion, IMMITABLE, and NO Synthetic Musk made either by chemical means or plant/flower extracts cannot compare to the real thing. So, go and preach someplace else - you're NOT wanted on this Perfume Blog. Go howl at the Moon.

Dear Bark Bark,
I felt really bad after posting my comment thinking that I had not educated myself about this subject and relied on Wikipedia information without searching for the truth and felt quite reprimanded by your post. I searched some more...I visited with veterinarians that have actually treated this species at the zoo in Toronto, looked up encyclopedias on this species and some sources say that the pods can be collected but must hunters cannot be bothered to collect them and will shoot because it is easier and they get more money this way. I found this link.

Http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.profumo.it/images/viaggio_kashmire/moschus_moschiferus_pods.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.profumo.it/cashmir/english/13_kashmiri_muskdeer_report_moschus.htm&h=375&w=500&sz=29&tbnid=tpUgBk91V9uPPM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddeer%2Bmusk&zoom=1&q=deer+musk&hl=fr&usg=__hXdFfQ9bFMUeduZJ-fnfmdSCAPg=&sa=X&ei=6SSlTK60IsP98AaHq_D8AQ&ved=0CDcQ9QEwBg

So, I kept researching... Looking for a farm that actually does this and have not been able to find any websites, links, videos or even pics of such a place.
I am a HUGE Musk lover and actually found this site looking for musk perfume, I do not appreciate your character assasination.
I find it strange in todays electronic age that there is NOTHING on the internet about humane collection of musk deer pods except for your comments.
Here is the reply from Dr Doreen Garmin one of the specialists at San Diego Zoo that works with these deers.
' I am sorry, I have travelled extensively since the Moschus chrysogaster has always been a passion of mine. I trully wish that such a place actually existed but unfortunately in most countries animal welfare is not a priority and money is hard to obtain. Killing the Musk deer is quick and easy and they cut out the sac that contains the musk gland and obtain a good price for it. Broke my heart to see the carcasses left intact except for the tiny gland removed. I have a feeling the person that said that humane farms exist is probably someone that sells illegally obtained Musk oil and feels the need to downplay the cruelty behind this product'

Please share proof of this place, I would love to buy their products!

Sincerely,

Hoping she is wrong

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Dear Woof,

Character Assasination....Hardly. It's just that I don't see the point of protesting natural Musk, when this is a PERFUME BLOG in which People share, etc, their love of Musk, Civet, Ambergris, and we don't need to be preached to.

As far as the good Dr Doreen Garmin is concerned, she is partially correct about the senseless killing of the small Male Musk Deer - it is indeed easier for POACHERS to just kill the Creature, BUT there are INDEED Deer Musk Farms in China, and there is a DEATH SENTENCE for Poachers who kill the Musk Deer. Having been to China, as Perfumes & Musk especially is my passion, I have visitied one such farm. And it is harvested humanely. I have NO doubt in my mind, money hungry Poachers have no reservations about shooting the little creature, but now these Poachers are also being hunted.

And by the way, you cannot buy Musk Products directly from these places - they are bought by Merchants who buy in Bulk and sell globally to Perfume Industry - Europe, Mid-East, Africa. Russia has their own Deer Musk, and since I've never been there, I have no idea whether or not they have Deer Musk Harvesting Farms.

Good Luck to you.

CER,

Consider joining PETA and maybe go after Lady GaGa who must have paid a nifty sum and wore a REAL MEAT Dress to make a Statement at the Emmys. Go after the Fur Industry,
They skin Animals alive/electocute them, go after the Slaughterhouses, who proceed to LITERALLY TORTURE, SKIN, and CUT OFF Body Parts of an Animal while they're STILL ALIVE. There are so many causes you should take up. Why be on this Perfume Blog, when there is SO much more cruelty to animals elsewhere. In China, they put Cats & Dogs in a Barbed Wire Cage and Roast them Alive over flames...now don't you think that's worth going after rather than attacking People on a Perfume Blog because of their Love of Musk, etc.

You REALLY want to do something? Get these Scientists to create something that has the Characteristics of Musk, Civet, and it's fixative powers, and that mimics almost identically Musk, Civet, is available to the Perfume Industry at a reasonable price - Savings being passed on to us-the general public, and you'll SEE how MUCH that will affect Poaching and revolutionize the Perfume Industry.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Bark bark,

Your statements on the fur industry are soooo very false
Maybe your "education" on the fur industry is derived from youtube videos of the CHINESE fur trade. I challenge you to do more research on the fur trade in America and you will see not only is it humane but there are many laws in place to keep it that way.A point i would like to make is that skunk essence muskrat musk as well as beaver castor have have been used in perfumes etc for a loong time. You buy from the trapper yet with your very misinformed information on the fur trade you bash him? please

I must apologize for my tree-hugging, nature loving friends. I think what they really meant to say was that your self-important, inhumane, neanderthal ignorance is astounding, you fucktard. That will be all.

You loser trash, we are all perfume lovers here, but we're also very aware of what goes on in the world, unlike you, who clearly have your head so far up your ass that you're...well...not aware of too much, except what a "smegma ridden asshole" smells like. Go crawl back into your hole, you pathetic throwback.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
I remember the R.H. Mystic Musk Oil from way back when. I wonder why the original chemists who made it can't reproduce the formula when so many people want to keep on buying it. I just ordered a few minutes ago Retro Egyptian Musk Oil from ebay. Promo mentions this musk oil a being a 60's & 70's fragrance, thick as molasses. Has anyone tried it? The company is Florida & I'm in Puerto Rico so it should not be too long before I know if it's anywhere like the legendary scent of the "distant" past. Later...

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Nope. The Egyptian Musk Oil from ebay was NOT anything like R.H. Mystic Musk Oil. After all the years this forum thread has been going on, which of the other musk oils out there is the one that comes the CLOSEST to R.H. Mystic Musk Oil? I recall buying eons ago this really tacky looking bottle of Mescatali Musk Oil Cologne for men which even had a little, rubber worm with a mexican hat inside. It was MAGICKAL (yes, with a K). Sort of reminded me of the being in Jr. High in the 70's. I think I am going to Google search to see if it still exists. Anyhoo, I just bought the following essential oils from ebay. Spikenard, myrhh, frankincense, patchouli & bergamot. Mix & match. Later.

Dina,

What was your impression of whatever you ordered from the fragrance shop. I just read through this whole thread and you never posted a review.

Disappointed in how things turned into a flame war also. Fail.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
Hello Vic,

First of all, RH MYSTIC MUSK was not made by Cooper Labs - it was made by a Cosmetics Company called RH COSMETICS in New York City. They have been out of business for many years and NO one has duplicated their unique scent.

The Musk formerly by Cooper Labs is now put out by CABOT LABS which back in the 1970s was WEST-CABOT LABS on Long Island, NY and the Musk they manufactured had REAL musk in it and it was sublime - it's stll called: THE ORIGINAL, NATURAL MUSK and is available at some drug stores and online for a modest price.

It is EXCEEDINGLY RARE to find ANY Manufacturer of so-called 'MUSKS' in this country (USA) to use REAL Musk extract, although it is still used in Europe in higher end fragrances and in other countries. Most 'Musks' today are extracted from Flowers, Herbs, etc and they use natural and artificial extracts to give it that 'musky' scent. There is NOTHING like REAL Musk, in my opinion.

The ONLY Musk that in my experience of searching for RH MYSTIC MUSK OIL that comes only VERY slightly close to it, is made by: THE FRAGRANCE SHOP
Http://www.thefragranceshop.com/ The name of their Musk is: ORIENTAL MUSK and it is expensive for only 1/4 of an ounce is $30...BUT you can get a small sample for $6 - that's good, so you can try it out and see if you like it.

And by the way, the Leading Corporate Scent Raider, if I may call them that, is DANA. Maybe we should all contact DANA and see if they're interested in manufacturing a unique Musk that smells like it did back in the '70s.

Good luck in your search.

Re: R.H.MYSTIC MUSK OIL
At it for five years and nobody's posted which is the CLOSEST musk oil to RH Mystic Musk. Can't imagine why the people at Cooper Labs haven't been able to find the original perfumers/chemists in order to reproduce the ORIGINAL 70's scent because it would make them millions. I will have to try the creator of this thread's mention of Jovan Musk and Bettina Musk at Walgreens. Anyhoo, a really magickal scent is Cacharel Cologne for Men (the original). Seems like "all" perfumes and colognes now days have the scent of ocean froth/sea scum or something to that effect which I first detected in the early or mid 90's. No like.
