Lemon Scented Perfume From The 70's
While shopping with my sister the other day, we came across a lemon scented fragrance at Bath and Body Works "verbena lemon". The smell took us back to a fragrance we used during our teenage years, but we can not remember the name. We asked another women in the store who was approx. Our age (47 - 48) and she too remembered the smell but not the name. It was not expensive, buthad a fresh clean light lemon scent. Based on this info. Does anyone have a suggestions???

There is also another possibility that it was "Skinny Dip " Lemon Cologne, made by Leeming Division, of Pfizer, Inc., made in the "70's".
It is no longer made, but a vintage 4 oz bottle is at www.auntjudysattic.com Price = $39.00

Hi! Recently I began a search for the same lemon scented perfume from the 70's that you are looking for. I thought is was Love's Lemon, so I contacted a perfume supplier in California. Bad move!!! Love's Lemon is nothing like the natural, clean, pure lemon smell of the perfume we used in the 70s. When you open the bottle, the first smell that you notice is alcohol and then an artificial lemon smell. THIS CAN'T BE THE SAME PERFUME!! My point in writing you is to tell you not to waste your money on Love's Lemon. Hope this email is helpful.

LOL!! A few weeks ago I reconnected with an old friend, yes, from the 70's! The first thing he asked me was, "do you remember that wonderful cologne you used to wear in high school, that lemon stuff?" I know there were others, but what I used was Love's Lemon Scent. It's a shame someone purchased it and discovered the formula has changed, but it was really terrific at the time. And they did make BabySoft, which I also wore, and loved. Ah, the memories!!

I am looking for a lemon perfume like the one I wore when I was a kid. It was called Loves Baby Soft Lemon. I ordered something on line called Love's Fresh Lemon. All it smells like is alcohol with a faint smell of something, but not lemon. The smell I'm looking for is just like the Kitchen Lemon hand soap at Bath & Body Works. If you haven't smelled that, you have to. I want to bathe in it.

With all the people on here reminising about their favorite perfumes why can't someone make these perfumes and colognes like they did when we were younger. Most of the perfumes today really stink. The only one I really liked in the last twenty years was RED and they stopped selling it in the department stores. I want Loves Lemon the way it was made in the 60's

The name of the perfume was Love's Fresh Lemon. There was also Love's Baby Soft perfume. If my memory serves me correct, these perfumes and a line of Love's cosmetics came out after the movie "Love Story." I have fun story to relate about Love's Fresh Lemon perfume. I was sitting in typing class (yes, I'm that old), and the boy that sat behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me I don't mean to be forward, but your perfume is making my mouth water." Of course, I put on more the next day.

In my own hunt for lemon fragrances that smell like lemon, I ran across this discussion. I too, used to LOVE Love's Lemon of the late 1960s into the 70s! I also was so excited to see a "lemon" fragrance by Love resurface somewhat recently, And I was very disappointed when it did NOT bring me back to the summer of '69! Unfortunately, it was not the same clean, super tangy, truly lemony old Love's Lemon (with Donovan singing in the background). This new one seems to have musk undertones...What the heck does musk have to do with fresh lemons?! By the way, Thanks for reminding me of the Skinny Dip Lemon. It was way different, but I remember becoming very fond of it as well. OH, and does anyone out there recall the yummy lemonade flavored lipstick/gloss by Yardley during the same time?-in the distinctive pink, white and periwinkle striped tube?

After reading alot of the posts...I think the perfume is Love..and it had a lemon fragrance with a clear bottle and a bright yellow cap...with LOVE in caps...I thinik it was by Yardley. There was also a fragrance called Heaven's Scent. Not sure if it was the same company. Love's Lemon fragrance wasn't around very long. In 1971-72 it is what I wore. Couldn't find it a few years later. Maybe if a lot of us contacted Yardley, they would make it again. It is worth a try. It was my favorite perfume. I have really only liked two in my life for me and I'm 54, I now like Dune...by Christian Dior. I'm contacting Yardley's now....We can make a difference...

Re: Lemon Scented Perfume From The 70's
Some of you are getting confused. The lemon scent you are referring to, called 'Love' was not by Yardley, it was by Menley and James, and was part of the cosmetics line called 'Love'. Forget the crap they have now, called 'Love's Fresh Lemon'; it is not the original, and those of you who have described it as smelling like alcohol and floor cleaner are correct. The original had a SILVER dome cap on a frosted glass bottle (and the splash products had that silver dome cap on a yellow plastic bottle). No silver dome - - no Love's Fresh Lemon. It was discontinued, long ago, as you know. There was also a scent called 'Eau De Love' - - also with the silver-domed, frosted glass bottle. Discontinued.
Just to be maddening - - the IDENTICAL scent was produced by the Philosophy company, in their bath/shower/shampoo called Old Fashioned Lemonade - - WHICH THEY HAVE NOW ***DISCONTINUED***!!!!!! (TELL ME *WHY*!!!); I know, because I bought the last case of it! But they have another lemon bath product, called You Are My Sunshine, which they tell me has the same scent (don't know how true this is; I haven't tried this product). They still have the Old Fashioned Lemonade in a hand creme, and in a Lip Shine. (There is also something called Pink Lemonade, but I suspect it has a sweeter scent.
The only product there is any point in buying on Ebay would be the discontinued Philosophy bath/shower/shampoo - - any "vintage" product will have turned; scents do not keep over time. And the saddest part of the Philosophy product, other than that the company has discontinued it, is that the scent only lasts as long as your bath; it is not designed to last beyond that. Using it as a shampoo (it's a great shampoo!), you can keep a very faint scent of it in your hair. The hand creme keeps its scent on your hands, though! (But it comes in a teeny-tiny little 2 oz. Tube - - for $15!).
So sad that the world has changed so much that it doesn't even smell the same.
As for the 'Love' commercial song, that's one thing you can still get - - 'Wear Your Love Like Heaven', by Donovan; Sarah McLachlan also does a new version of it.

Just to say that, because of IFRA regulations, all fragrances with citrus elements have been/are being reformulated. In its wisdom, this organisation has decreed that these are carcinogenic and manufacturers have either reduced the amounts they use or found bland substitutes. This explains why so many of our old favourites no longer smell the same - nothing to do with our noses, all to do with new recipes! And I would echo the comments that O de Lancome is currently one of the best lemon perfumes you can get these days.

Although I'd really like to have a dream bottle of Love's Lemon, vintage 1969, (and yes, Eve, in a plain frosted glass bottle with dome shaped top...seems like a yellow dome top for the Lemon and chrome-look dome top for Eau de Love?)--(and Wow, I can smell Eau de Love in my head!, which I was reminded of approx. 15 yr.s ago when Calvin Klein released his original CK) I have enjoyed a number of citrus fragrances through the years. I usually detest the smell and repeatedly request they don't apply it right before they come near me. But TODAY I was thrown way back in time when my youngest sat down next to me and I instantly when back too! "OMG what is that you are wearing? It smells just like this lemon perfume from when I was a kid...." For next mile I tried to remember the name etc.. I love all the previous posts and they helped me a lot...my memory was the Loves version...
Even though some may not agree w/me in case you're interested the fragrance she was wearing is 'Wild Honeysuckle' body splash by bath n body works. After closer review once I got home, the smell was heavier and a tad too sweet, but it does have that citrusy lemony overtone that triggered (at least) my memory! |

Re: Lemon Scented Perfume From The 70's
Lee Ann, if those have been kept so that they are still intact and fresh, I would be interested in purchasing them from you, if you'd care to sell them, at a negotiable price. You can e-mail me to discuss it, if you're interested, at evedemian@verizon.net .
As for the value of what you've found, this is actually very interesting, because in the auction market you have various motivations for bidding on such things - - all of them sentimental (and of course, people put different values on sentiment, and then there are the practical restraints on what one can bid, to consider).
I, for example, have no interest in the bottles, but in what is in them, and I seek intact contents (which are difficult to find, in scents that are aged; you have to come upon that serendipitous combo of something having been kept air-tight, in the dark, and in just the right, constant temperature).
There are others who are hung up on the containers - - and *some* containers have actual value in the bottle-collecting market (though these bottles, from the Love products have no general value, that I know of).
Now let's talk about bidding on Ebay - - which I happen to consider a fantastic venue. For something like what you have, whether intact and use-able or not, the value can fluctuate, depending on sheer, random chance (which is one of the things I love about Ebay). Something like that could sell for just a few dollars. Or it could sell for hundreds, if you happen upon some maniac who's willing to pay anything for the items. There are certain items that will ALWAYS bring in a huge profit. Slicker lipsticks, by Yardley, for instance, in the "iconic" striped lipstick case, will never go for under $250. I watched an auction for a set of six *tiny*, forty-year-old, unopened (so as to retain the *scent*) "sample" Slickers go for - - are you sitting down? - - almost $800. Probably un-useable - - and the person who bought them would probably wouldn't dream of using them - - but they were in their little cardboard presentation case, and they were perfectly intact (you could see the color of them through the little plastic cases these were in) - - and apparently the sight of them (and probably the scent - - because sellers always feature mention of the scent!) was sufficiently meaningful to someone that they were willing to cough up that much to win that auction for them.
Yardley Oh! de London usually goes for a huge bid - - but, again - - being someone who spends half her time on Ebay, hunting, I have won auctions for bottles of this for very modest bids, when there just didn't happen to be much competition for them. There is one up on Ebay right now, but I will not bid on it because I can tell by the darkened color of it that the scent has turned, and is no longer good (I verified this by e-mail, with the seller). But I'm sure she will get a good price, nevertheless, even if just for the bottle - - because, again, this particular bottle is "iconic"; it just has a particular association with a time, and a style trend (Mod, from London, post-Beatles) that gives it a cachet that the Love products and, particularly, their containers, manufactured domestically, in New Jersey, never had.
However - - I have to tell you that a 2.5 ounce bottle (full and seemingly intact, according to the color of it) of *Eau de Love* sold, last week, for a shocking $407. But that is *Eau de Love* - - which has a certain cachet that the other Love products, including the original Love's Fresh Lemon cologne (and associated products) don't seem to quite have. Recently got a bottle, a quarter full, and FANTASTICALLY intact(!!!) of Love's Fresh Lemon, for $22. (*Empty* bottles of Oh! de London, and *empty* Slicker cases, have sold for hundreds of dollars).
If you list on Ebay, you can always sell at a 'Buy It Now' price, which is *not* an auction, but simply putting the item on sale at the price you set. You can also start your auction at whatever price you choose. But the thrills and chills come in when I tell you that if you set a 'Buy It Now' price, you may short yourself out of a staggering amount of money that might be offered, in an auction, for your items - - and if you don't, you may wind up with next to nothing for them, depending on chance. So starting your auction at a reasonable amount seems to be the best way to go with these.
As to what price to start them at, again, this depends on what condition they're in; if they're magically fresh and teriffic as the day they were bought, I would say that you should start each item off at over a hundred dollars. BUT - - if you start them that high, you also may never sell them. I watched a canister of Love's Fresh Lemon talc inexplicably sit there for months, at $129 starting price, and no one touched it (alas! I was on strict financial lock-down at the time, and it was taken off before I had recovered, or I would surely have bought it). I have never seen that happen with a Yardley Oh! product (except for the eye shadow that someone wants a 'Buy It Now' of $225 for - - *mind* you(!) I have seen that same product sell fro MORE than $225 in an auction that started low, and went through the roof!). But it seems that most of the "lemon-heads", wistful though they might be, aren't nearly as fanatic as the Oh! fans.
Hope this gives you some idea of assessment of the (variable) value of what you have, that you seek. |

I purchased a Body Butter in "Sweet Lemon" from "The Body Shop" here in Canada [don't know if they have stores in the US]. It has an amazing lemon scent and is much like the fresh lemon scent from the 70's I am seeking but it does not come in a fragrance product. It only comes in a Body Butter and a Lip Balm [too sweet and wears off quickly].

Yes I do remember it. It was called "Love". I do not remember who the manufacturer was but you could buy it at a drugstore. I say it in a Walgreens or CVS just a couple of years ago.

My favorite Lemon body splash fom the 70's was Revlon's
Wild Lemon Body Splash, I used to keep it in the fridge during the summer. Still searching for a scent that compares,
And nothing close. I have been looking for years. |

Actually....it was NOT Love's Lemon.....there was a cologne made by Revlon called Lemon......I should know, I wore it ALL the time and would give anything to get the same again, but alas, nothing is as pure as Revlon.

I was addicted to Yardley's Love Lemon Mist Spray....in the 70's. It was fabulous. Not really perfume, but an after shower splash that hung on you pretty well. And I can still hear the Donovan song "Wear Your love lights, Wear your love light...." Yummy. Too bad they don't make that anymore.

I was doing some research on natural home products and lemon was very popular. Someone recommended buying an atomizer and filling it half with water and half using a bottle of lemon juice called PLJ. It's meant to be an air freshener but it smelt very clean and lemony so I began spraying it on my clothes as well. The best thing is, you can always alter how much you dilute the juice depending on the smell you are after. It's eco friendly too.

Love's Lemon is made by "Dana" - not Yardley or any other company. It is still sold, but because of stiffer restrictions on drug / cosmetic companies, the scent is slightly different. Certain additives are no longer allowed by the FDA. In case you are interested here it is:

Loves Fresh Lemon Body Mist..2.45 oz. 69 g just as it appears on the bottle. My high school girlfriend wore this fragrance in the early 70's and it was and still is my most favorite scent on a woman. My father worked for Yardley of London for 42 years and was always bringing home the newest products and none ever compared to Loves Fresh Lemon Body Mist. I still have flashbacks to the seventies whenever I smell anything close to it on a woman. I still have a bottle with about a half ounce of liquid in it for emergency flashbacks. On the back of the bottle it reads Love Cosmetics, Menley & James, Montreal Que. I hope this helps clear things up for any of you out there.

I remember Love's Fresh Lemon in the '70s came in phallic shaped bottle. Its top notes were very lemony but deteriorated very quickly— within minutes, really — to a mild, flowery scent that smelled kind of cheap. That's probably why it was taken off the market. It wasn't a very good quality of perfume.

Has any one heard of Lemon Drench - Used to buy it in Boots the Chemists may have been a NO7 scent, Came in large bottles which I splashed over everything probably last seen about 1975???

Yes, Lemon Drench from Boots was delicious, and came in a frosty bottle. It must still have been around in 1980 because I took a bottle on our honeymoon, and my husband became addicted to it too! He still remembers it to this day, and we have never found a replacement for it, although he is very fond of Dior's Eau Sauvage. M&S has a lemon range at present. It's not the same, but is very lemony.
