Ambergris Oil By Houbigant From The 70's And
I love the scent of an oil originally produced from the male sperm whale " AMBERGRIS OIL " it was by Houbigant. They no longer produce this scent. I would love to purchase more if available

Ambergris isn't produced anywhere in the west. But there is a perfume company in the UAE that sells pure Ambergris oil.
The company is called Al Haramain perfumes. The company is famous for producing pure Aloeswood oil and other perfumes.
The company that makes it is well known and has a good reputation.
Theres a perfume store on Ebay that carries it in case anyone is interested.

| Azzaro Pour Homme by Loris Azzaro is an elegant, woody, masculine fragrance with notes of amber and musk that captures the contemporary vitality of the modern man, and is made from ambergris a.k.a-a fatty excretion from whale sperm. There is an article about it in the december issue of detail |

| I can't tell you how many times I have searched for the Ambergris Oil by Houbigant! I purchased some from someone on eBay who said they matched the scent, but I was very disappointed. If anyone can find something that is true to the scent of what Houbigant had out, please let me know! |

| I too loved that scent and have not found a scent to call my own since 1985. I just found a web site that sells an ambergris oil for a reasonable price, it is a shop in detroit. The web site is rafalspicecompany.com you can google it if you have any trouble getting to the site. The phone is 313 259 6373 please tell them i recommended them. They were very nice in responding quickly to a shipping problem. I hope this helps you. Oh, i must add, when i got my shipment i recognized the scent but it is not quite the same as the houbigant. It is an oil not spray but the scent is true to ambergris. |

| Oh my gosh, I loved this oil so much. It is such a clean scent. My grandmother and I wore it and I loved hugging her and smelling it. She died over 15 years ago and everytime I go to her home I pick up her ambergris bottle and smell that clean scent and rub the wand on my wrists. It still smells as wonderful as it did so many years ago. I had called the Alyssa Ashley company to find out if they had any in storage, etc. They of course did not but told me that the mens musk cologne was similar. I bought some but was disappointed with the scent. If anyone comes across any please let me know. I have not found another signature scent since they stopped making this. It's the clean smell that I just love. Thank you Amanda |

| Raw ambergris fetches approximately US$10 per gram (as of 2006), with much higher prices possible for particularly high-quality samples.[1][2] In the United States, importing, buying, or selling ambergris — including ambergris that has washed ashore — was considered a violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.[3] However, in 2001 this ruling was overturned, and ambergris was deemed not to be a byproduct of the whaling industry, since the whale expels this substance naturally. There is currently no prohibition in the buying and selling of ambergris in the United States. For more information contact U.S Fish & Wildlife – Import Enforcement – 650-876-9078. |

| I am living abroad in Cairo Egypt. I have found Ambergris Oil here in Cairo at the perfumeries. I also found Musk Deer Oil. I purchased several bottles from different perfumers. I've never smelled ambergris before so I'm no expert. The oils which I purchased are dark and thick. About the color of dark honey, almost like maple syrup but not as thick. The oils smell very sweet with a powedery scent. The scent changes as it wears on your body. What I smell inthe bottle is nothing like what it smells on my skin. I am conducting some experiments with the different ambergris oils to see if there is any difference in their quality or scent. The deer musk smells quite pungent but once on the skin, has a lovely scent as well. |

| Kayla, your information is incorrect. Ambergris Oil is NOT illegal, as it is expelled from whales' digestive tract and there is NO need to harm the whales in any way. The Ambergris is usually found on beaches or floating out in the sea/ocean. |

Sonya, as I and others have said before on this Perfume Blog, Ambergris is NOT illegal, it's just hard to obtain. The Whale spews out the Ambergris from its blow hole. The Ambergris is a product of the Whale's digestive tract, and the Whale is NO longer hunted and killed for it.
Only some countries continue the hunting and killing of Whales such as Japan and Norway, amongst others. But for the whole, the Whale is a protected specie(s) in most of the world.
Ambergris IS NOT ILLEGAL, please do check your facts. There are some American Companies that still sell Ambergris, (I know, because I just bought some Ambergris from a Company about 2 weeks ago), but it is expensive, and unless it's refined and blended correctly, it will not smell good.
Good Luck |

I would suggest, as well, that those of you who come on this Perfume Blog to condemn us, who are lovers of Perfume and who enjoy using 'natural' oils, and to blast us with your sanctimonius diatribes, go to PETA website and there vent your frustrations.
You do not belong on this Perfume Blog. Most of us who are here, are here for ONE REASON ONLY, because we LOVE scents and are passionate about it. THAT'S IT!!! We are not here to condemn ANYBODY! We are here to share our love of SCENT.
So, to YOU all collectively, who condemn us...GET A LIFE!!!! |

Ladies,
The ebay merchant perfumery_empire from Singapore is listing Rare Houbigant Ambergris Alyssa Ashley once again!
I ordered one last night and it is relisted today. $78.00 U. S. Plus shipping.
I also ordered and received a small roll on decant from the Perfumed Court and fell in love with this fragrance (while looking for the Civet, and still looking).
This merchant has 100% positive feedback and her email begins with camay...so I am thinking it is the same one mentioned up at the top of this thread. |

| I got it from someone who decants perfume for a fragrance company. I think she basically charged me the cost of what she would have made had she sold all of it as decanted bottles. I wasn't too swift - especially when I saw it later on ebay, but it happens. I spent $200.00 on the oil - which helps ease the pain of the cost of the spray. |

| Re: Ambergris Oil By Houbigant From The 70's |
So am I. I got my oil from an ebay seller who had a "buy it now" for $175. It was the clear round bottle. I am thinking this might date to the 80s, but not sure. Does anyone know for sure when they did away with the black bottles?
And I found this immediately after I had ordered the spray. It had only been listed for 12 hours, but I figured the opportunity might not present itself again for a long time.
All this for someone who is really looking for the Civet, but haven't been able to find that at all yet.
This all was a pricey adventure for me, but you know what? I know I have wasted that much looking for a fragrance I can live with. It truly is a "comfort scent" for me. I am using the Ambergris for my summer fragrance and I am really loving it.
To top it off, I have since read 4 different perfume reviews that Houbigant Ambergris became Monsieur Musk, which was originally by Houbigant, but last produced by Dana. Though it is not being produced any longer, it is still very easy to find.
So I ordered some of that also, for a total of about $10 including shipping, and I'll be damned, it is near identical....maybe a little watered down, but I am not sure I could distinguish one from another if I didn't know it - other than that the old Houbigant Ambergris spray leaves a bit of an oily feel on you. |

| Re: Ambergris Oil By Houbigant From The 70's |
Karen - yes, I saw the ebay sale you are talking about. In fact, I was the first bidder. Due to a snafu from using the "one click bid", that package could have gone higher as I tried in the last minute to outbid the winner, but "one click" did me dirty. Oh the price was outrageous, but it is so rare!
Barbara - earlier this year there was an ebay seller from Singapore who was selling the Ambergris spray. I don't see her on now, but it is possible she might reappear in the future. She seemed to have a pretty good supply of the spray. It appears now that even The Perfumed Court is out of the decanted Ambergris they were selling earlier this summer.
In the meantime, I can attest to the fact that Houbigant Musk Monsieur, or Monsieur Musk is a dead ringer for Houbigant Ambergris. It is much more reasonably priced and might hold you over until you find a bottle labeled Ambergris.
I am of the opinion now that the oils did hold their fragrances better than the colognes. And still am nearly grief stricken over losing that auction that had both Civet and Ambergris Oil. I did manage to win the Civet Spray that came up on ebay in July and was pretty disappointed by how "off" it smelled. Another member of this forum suggested washing the spray off my wrist with water, and it did help refresh it some. But who knows when or if a similar item will ever come up for auction again. |

| Re: Ambergris Oil By Houbigant From The 70's |
Sue,
I've come across perfumedistributor.com also when doing a search for Civet Perfume. I wish they would delete that listing since they do not have it and never will have it again.
I have never heard of a separate cologne by Alyssa Ashley called "Civet Women". I think it is just their way of saying that this was a womens fragrance.
Alyssa Ashley was bought out by Houbigant once upon a time, in case you were not aware of it. Alyssa Ashley and/or Houbigant Musk, Ambergris, and Civet were the same products as I understand it.
Both my Civet and Ambergris spray mists say "Houbigant" on the front of the bottles, but if you turn the bottles around they say "Alyssa Ashley Inc. Div. Houbigant Inc. New York, N.Y. 10019 written length wise on the back. These were the black aeorsal bottles with silver caps with the eye logo for the Civet and the wave logo for the Ambergris (which also looks like it could be the fins of a whale breaking the ocean's surface).
My Musk oil from the same fragrance trio is in the black flat circular shaped bottle with the interlinking male/female symbols. It is just labeled Musk Oil on the front, but on the back, again, Alyssa Ashley Inc., Div. Houbigant Inc., etc. It holds 14 ml or .48 fl. Oz.
This is the same kind of bottle I had that contained Civet oil back in 1975 when I first came across it.
The Ambergris oil that I picked up earlier this year is the clear flat circular bottle, with the same wave/whale logo and says in small print Ambergris Oil right above bigger words Amber Gris by Alyssa Ashley. Houbigant is not listed on this bottle. It holds 14 ml or .48 fl. Oz.
The corresponding clear circular bottle of Musk by Alyssa Ashley is still easy to find on ebay. It holds 15 ml or 0.5 fl. Oz. The bottom of this bottle has a sticker on it that says CEDIP Monaco Made in Italy and a serial number.
I think the clear cylinder shaped bottles found on ebay hold 0.25 fl. Oz. |

Hi Cindy,
Thanks for your very informative response. Back in the 70's, I seem to remember that Civet came in a brushed aluminum effect aerosol tin with a black plastic cap and the eye logo and 'Civet' also in black on the tin, (in England) - reverse way round to what you had in the US! Very similar looking to the Musk body spray aerosol you can currently buy, except that the can is white. I should imagine that the other two fragrances were the same; I can't really recall.
I have seen the perfume oil available on various websites at reasonable prices and have just received the body spray, which is also made in Italy. They give you the website address on the spray which I have just had a look at. It was interesting to note that Civet and Ambergris didn't even get a mention in the list of perfumes launched since 1968! |

Decanted Houbigant is indeed sold by The perfume court.
I'm sure it's delightful, because it comes from the original.
Owning the original is not illegal. The stuff comes from the 70's. How many things do you angry people have in your closets from the 70's that came from animals?
They don't make it anymore for obvious reasons, but
The grandfather clause is alive and active. I agree with the others, go vent somewhere else. Conniseurs of fine perfume are here. Yes I have Ambergris original oil by Houbigant, and it is a treasure.

Cindy - I think I must have been the last person to purchase the Ambergris decant from The Perfumed Court, as I went in the next day to read the description again, and it was no longer listed. That was on 17th September and I received it this morning. How glorious it is! It is indeed the oil and smells wonderful once on the skin, but a little bit 'off' from the bottle. I only have 5mls and will use it sparingly, but having read so many good reviews about Monsieur Musk, I think I will avail myself of some before that disappears, too, although shipping to England is a bit more expensive! I was also originally looking for Civet, but have not been successful so far, although I have The Dusty Rose Perfumery's version and to my nose it smells very similar, but I am trying to remember from over 30 years ago when it was last available here.
I've also noticed that Musk has disappeared from the shops, but you can still order it. I think I'll stock up on that too, before it goes the same way! |

Sue, I tried the Dusty Rose Civet copy sample, too, and for me, it just wasn't it. Looks like you were lucky to get the Ambergris when you did. I very much prefer it to the Civet spray I got off ebay. It's genuine, but I have to think it has turned.
Dina, I noticed still no feedback on the ebay package and the buyer has since posted feedback for later auctions. Now I'm curious, too. Maybe the Civet fragrance just wasn't able to keep its fragrance through the years - even if one is lucky enough to be able find it! Or have the bottles been refilled or what? (Buyer posted feedback for another item saying it was genuine and a welcome change from the fakes on ebay!) |

I recently gave in and purchased the Monsieur Musk pure spray cologne from Amazon (about $15!) and instantly smiled when I smelled it. Hi Ann,
Yes, I think so, too - although it is the Ambergris cologne spray that it smells nearly identical to. There is some difference in the Ambergris oil.
I stumbled onto this "secret" here, earlier this year:
Scroll down to the next to the last review of Monsieur Musk by Dana. Someone claims to have written the manufacturer of Ambergris and was told Monsieur Musk was the closest. I imagine if you could find a vintage Houbigant Monsieur Musk, it would be closer, still. The "basenotes" website gives generally very high and favorable reviews for Monsieur Musk.
And as I posted earlier, a seller in Singapore is currently selling vintage Houbigant Ambergris spray again.
Dina-
I privately contacted the winner of the Primal Scents auction on ebay. FAKE! Bottles were filled with odorless oil. It escalated to a dispute, and ebay ruled in her favor. She got her money back. |

I stumbled on this site while researching information about whales, an endangered / protected species of mammal. As a writer pointed out earlier in the blog, it is illegal to trade in Ambergris, which is essentially whale vomit excreted from the mouth of a whale or sometimes the bowels. Scientists believe it's probably the by-product of condensed undigested squid beaks, which after being excreted from the whale the substance floats on the ocean and is cured by salt water. Sure it makes nice perfume, however, by people creating a market demand for it one has to ask, could it add to the problems faced by dwindling whale populations? As we know extinct is forever. Surely as far as the whales are concerned ambergris is not good enough "to die for".
There are some exquisite nature, sustainable, organic products on the market, why not try some out, you might be pleasantly surprised. |

Hi Linda, It was in 1975 when those were purchased. Unfortunately I ran out of that lovely Scent about Two years ago..Amazingly the Scent always stayed Fresh. Leaving it in a climate controlled enviroment is the thing to do....Like my Deneuve, which is Discontinued, is preciously taken care of.
Ambergris never went rancid like some other oils do.
Nice to read your post... :) Thanks!! |

| I have a bottle of the oil and spray from the 70's and neither went bad. I had to search high and low. Sometimes you can find them on ebay - at least the spray. It's listed under Alyssa Ashley Houbigant. - Chris |

I had used the Dana Perfumes Monsieur Musk as a good substitute for Houbigant Ambergris. Dana Perfumes went bankrupt and re-formed as New Dana Perfumes, then were purchased by Coty. I noticed that the formulation changed and it was not quite the same, missing the ambergris element.
I found a place that has very good pure Ambergris oil, Tigerflag Perfumes:

So I mix the oil into the Monsieur Musk and this works very well to be virtually identical to the old Houbigant perfume at a fraction of the price you would have to pay to get one of the old bottles. |

Here's the website for Talisman, the exclusive distributor of Madini perfume oils:

Just copy and paste it into your browser.
Hope this helps! |

I just bought the Al-Haramain Ambergris...Don't. It is the worst smell I have ever smelt in my life. Camel dung essence and strong. I had to have a bath before someone could smell me. Has anyone got a better recommendation? What is the Caswell Massey one like, or the Madini one? Has anyone tried these?
Nothing matches up to the original so far.. And I have tried many. |

| I have tried both. This is how I would describe them. Madini Ambargris is a deep smoky vanilla. Casswell Massey Ambergris is a cinnamony vanilla. Both are very inexpensive to try, but nothing similar to Houbigant/Alyssa Ashley. I recommend Monsieur Musk by Dana as nearly indistinguishable to Houbigant Ambergris. Monsieur Musk was originally by Houbigant also and was sold out to Dana. Its inexpensive also. |

| To all the whale lovers out there u miss the point completely. Those of us whom are forever fans of houbigants ambergris have nothing to do with whale hunters. The perfume is extinct . Finding a bottle of it is more exciting than u will ever understand. It doesn't hurt whales anymore the damage was done. Quit getting ur undies in a bunch and get a life. BTW I love whales they're one of the most magnificent species ever created by the one and only creator. Extinct isn't forever he can create them again. |

| To mummyf ...ur right. That ambergris was foul. I purchased some too. I think its raw and illegal. Stay away from that supplier. Somethings not right at all with his biz. Fortunately I only tested a small sample. |

What's funny about the reeking one, is somebody must have to decant it before selling it to us. I've never smelt something so near to decanted doodoo in my life. Do some people really like this smell for them to stock it? I do realise it is a single note ingredient, but who wants a basenote of poop? I would rather have synthetic ambergris.
I got some from a hippie gem place recently and although quite nice, wasn't it either. BUT THERE IS HOPE.....I have found a local perfume creator who purports to be able to make me some using my sample. When I have smelt it, I will report back.
The only sample I have, is rather weak smelling, I really needed a drop or two of the old oil version, but the last bottle of Ambergris oil sold on e-bay for £111, the musk oil for £55. No way can I afford that.
I haven't smelt monsieur Houbigant yet. |

First of all....Ambergris is NOT Extinct - I still buy, and although it's nowhere near as nice as the one by Houbigant - it is still available.
Secondly - There seems to be some confusion among the Ranks - you DON'T NEED TO KILL A WHALE in order to obtain Ambergris...it is a By-Product of a Whale's intestinal tract which is expelled and found floating on some of the Oceans and Beaches of the World. Hope this clears up some confusion about Ambergris.
Those of you who are against the use of Ambergris, should not be on this Perfume Blog - this is for Fragrance Lovers - if you must rail about something - go someplace else and allow those of us who Love Perfume/Fragrances to enjoy it.
Preaching here is NOT allowed! |

| CATHY. WHALES ARE NOT KILLED. FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE AMBERGRI. IT IS GOT FROM SOMETHING THEY FIND FLOATING ON THE SEA WHICH THE WHALE HAS EXTRACTED. SO DON'T WORRY ANY MORE... |

As quoted by the Psychotic Moron-CATHY-who wants to Kill people but 'Save the Whales'..."Then go kill a whale, cause I'm sure after you have contributed to killing off the species... You will feel much better about yourself oh and let's not forget you'll smell good too.

Whales are NOT killed in order to obtain AMBERGRIS...it is a by-Product of a Whale's intenstinal tract and is expelled and harvested on Oceans of the World and sometimes it is found on Beaches! |

| Get a life Cathy. No one cares what you think here. And as for morons save that for yourself. What are you 5? Name calling? Over perfume that isn't even sold anymore. And no extinct is not forever. Try reading a Bible instead of blogs where people like you don't belong. |

| And extinct isn't forever? Are you a moron? Yes the animal has been dead and although you might not be a whale hunter, they still died in vain. Oh but not in vain to you of course cause you still get to profit off their smell. The money that is spent on it is still... Blood Money, wether or not they have been dead for a while. |
