Re: Civet Oil
The process used to obtain this oil from these animals is very cruel. I would consider this before you give your money to support such practices.

Re: Civet Oil
I ordered the "civet oil" replica from Eye of Newt and I don't think it smells like the original civet oil at all (although it's not a bad scent), just doesn't smell the same.

Re: Civet Oil
The scent has haunted me for 17 years. It was all I wore in college. Everytime I pass and essential oils store, I look, not expecting, but hoping the scent will become availible again. If anyone can find it please let me know.

Re: Civet Oil
I have looked all over for alyssa ashley civet oil, I wore it from the time I was 15 until 13 years ago when the very last of my oil ran out. I 1st found out about civet oil in Teen
Magazine it was my earth scent, so being the 70's you had to have the earth scents , the shoes & the water buffalo sandels
If anyone finds any civet oil please let me in on the secret.

Re: Civet Oil
Never found a good replacement for the original; i've heard it can't be made because of restrictions on using true civet oil from the cat; I did find a few on ebay and paid nearly $80 + shipping for a vintage original...

Re: Civet Oil
Have looked all day and found the original alyssa ashley civet at perfumedistributor.com for $250.00. Couldn't believe it. Used to pay about $5.00 I think.

Re: Civet Oil
Civet oil! Yes! It was my absolute favorite. I wore it all during high school in the 70s. I remember the last bottle I bought did not smell "right." I thought it was just a bad batch, but that was right before they discontinued it. I so wish we could find it again. There's a cat in the neighborhood that I don't like....think we can figure out how to do that anal gland scraping ourselves??? ===giggle===

How did you find the product which you received?

Re: Civet Oil
If the civet oil you ordered is the same as the 70's, please advise!!!! I used to use Herbal Essence original, wear the water buffalo sandals and earth shoes - have never seen water buffalo sandals or even any of the wedgie sandals as cool as we used to have!!!! And I wore Jovan Civet Oil and Alyssa Ashley!

Re: Civet Oil
Civet oil is from civet cats. The oil is scraped of their perineal glands, which are located in the urinogenital ducts and rectum. SCRAPED FROM CAT BUTTS!!! mmmmmm rub cat butt oil on yourself thats so sexy. You make me ill.

Re: Civet Oil
Can not help you with the civet oil but the buffalo jesus sandals are making a come back and are all over the internet and ebay and yes they are the exact same ones we had in our hippie days back in the 60's and 70's! These are sites that have them but there are many just google "buffalo sandals" or "water buffalo sandals" same with ebay.

Re: Civet Oil
I just received an order of Civet Oil from "The Perfumer's Apprentice" in California. I've heard how great it is in making perfumes, so I was happy to have found it on the internet. I plan on experimenting with it in a MUCH diluted form. I cannot believe how bad it smells. The only way I can describe it is to say that it smells like you are about one inch away from a dirty hog. It is truly one of the nastiest smells I've experienced. Now I want to see the wonders it works in perfume making.

Re: Civet Oil
Hi Nettie, as nasty as natural 'Civet Oil' is, it is an AMAZING FIXATIVE, and magnifyer of scents, not to mention, it is long-lasting, which is why the Civet Scents of the '70s by Alyssa Ashley were so beautiful.

Good luck on your perfume experimentation.

Re: Civet Oil
William, you shouldn't be on this blog. Why did you even bother? We don't need some jerk judging us because we like Civet Oil, which by the way has quite a different scent once it touches skin.

Try to get a life.

Re: Civet Oil
Hey Netti, I'm left to wonder if there's more than one source of Civet. What I was led to believe (from a reputable friend) is that the Civet Cat from Java was hunted down for the Musk gland to be used in esoteric Islamic rituals by the Imans(holymen),later after about the 16th.-17th.century the French inthe developement of their perfume industry, found the Civet oil to be an excellent buffer.Just after the beginning
Of the 20th.cen.1928-1930(35),the Civet Cat was completely out out of extinction.By the 40s', laws were enacted but not enforced with sale of the oil.In 1963,a Sendorii Imports in NYC. Managed to buy the last of 5 avaiable kilos(could not import for his biz anymore) of the "Zabbat Zibbit",or Java Civet.Maybe I'm wrong if it's still produced. But you're right,it
Has a smell that last all day&don't smell ike anything else!
How much does it go for these days?

Re: Civet Oil
Jose:

Whether the civet oil I received was "authentic" or not, I cannot say. The price was only about $7.00 for 1/2 ounce and is more potent than any other oil I've used.
posted 09/22/07 by Nettie

Re: Civet Oil
Hey Netti, thanks for that.I think what's most important is how one feels about ones find-purchases,this may infact be what you sought, and the price"WOW".
One thing that's has me sadden is the gradual disappearance of the niceset things we've come to enjoy,e,g,
Sandalwood oil(from Mysore) amber paste, Civet & other Musk,
Which are now being synthesized.Maybe it's for the best?
In either case, sounds like you're going to have alot of fun. Enjoy& be well.

Re: Civet Oil
How can I fine the original Civit Oil perfume from Houbigant? does anyone know?
posted 06/25/08 by carol

Re: Civet Oil
I have ordered the item from the referenced web site and it is NOTHING like civit oil. In fact, the smell made me sick!!!!! After the initial "whiff," I gave it one more try hours later just before I promptly chucked it in the trash. Be certain you want to put your money in it before you pay! Sorry to burst your bubble, especially if you LOVE this scent as much as I did. I fear it is gone FOREVER!!
posted 06/25/08 by Deb G

Re: Civet Oil
I also ordered the civet oil hoping it resembled the original perfume by Houbigant. I was repulsed and tossed it. Still hoping to find it on ebay someday for less than $250.00.

Re: Civet Oil
Hi everyone.
I'm Linda, the owner of the Perfumer's apprentice.
A friend of mine told me about this thread, so i thought i'd jump in.
The civet blend that i have on my website is a perfumery ingredient from the company Givaudan, which is used by professional perfumers. It is similar to the scent of natural civet and yes, it is extremely nasty and powerful. To evaluate it, it should be diluted to 1% or less.
The civet perfume by Ashley was a really nice perfume, and probably had a trace of a civet component, but it was not supposed to smell like civet. I compare civet to Thai "fish sauce". This fish sauce is nasty, but it is an important ingredient in Thai chicken coconut soup (which i love).
I will add a comment to the description on my website for civet that explains this.
I hope this helps!

Linda Does it smell the same...?

Re: Civet Oil
Deb & Robyn,

Yup - the REAL Civet Oil is Very Fecal Smelling because it comes from the Perianal Gland of the male Civet Cat, which it uses to mark its scent for territory and females.

Most of the Civet Oils of the '70s were SUPER refined/processed, so that it's original Fecal smell was non-existent - only it's basic scent and amazing 'Fixative' qualities were left. Too bad you got rid of the Civet Oils. You could have 'cured' a drop with either Sandalwood oil or another of your favorite fragrances. It would have taken time, though.

Good Luck,

I have a small black bottle from the 70's of the original Houbigant Civet oil and it still smells incredible. Please let me know if you find anything that is like it. I've had someone tell me to look for the Civet Essential oil and not the perfume.

Hi there, i just received real civetoil -it is more a butterlike substance actually- from a friend in Jemen. Just a little tip all over my skin is a delight, the smell from the bottle is very intense and shitlike. It becomes sweet when applied in extremely small doses. My cats also react strongly to it, first fearfull and now they purrrrr.
