Civet Oil From Alyssa Ashley (1970's)
| I know it's a stretch, but I'm looking for Civet Oil made by Alyssa Ashley in the 1970's. I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me locate or lead me in the right direction in finding this long discontinued product. Or does anyone have any to sell? |

| Yes, I have the same small bottle. Civet Oil was made from the Civet Cat gland. Alyssa Ashely and I think Houbigant used to manufacture it. Haven't seen it in years. I'm still searching though. I found a company called eyeofthenewt.com out of Seattle that sells a faux Civet Oil product. Smells good but not the same as the original. Good luck in your search. Let me know if you find a good ample source...thanks. |

I cannot believe I found someone interested in Civet Oil! I still have an empty bottle from the seventies. It is my favorite perfume in the whole world. The empty bottle I have (black with silver top) doesn't even have a scent to it anymore! I bought a bottle of English Blazer by Yarldley for my boyfriend on ebay from this guy who buys estates and sells frangrances and asked him about civet oil. He said that occasionally he comes across it and will contact me if he does. Have you tried any perfume oils that can be bought off the internet? I did, from one company it was called civet oil but it did not smell anything like the original. Do you know , was the original made from cats' glands? that is what I heard...........Dana perfumes makes Musk by Alyssa Ashley and this is the closest I have come to Civet oil. This is an oil as well and I think that that helps in coming close. Still, it is not the same.........

| Alyssa Ashley made three oils in the 70's: Musk, Civet, and Ambergris. I have only been able to locate the musk, but Civet was my favorite too. Please let me know if you find it. Thanks. |

| I remember these very well, too- my sister and stepmother used to wear them all the time, particularly the civet. Nothing smells like real musk and civet. Civet and musk come from the civet cat and musk ox, respectively, and ambergris from whales. Whales had to be slaughtered to get ambergris, and while not killed, the civet cat and musk ox had to have their anal glands painfully scraped to obtain those products. Boy, were we awfully un- PC in those days! Unfortunately, no synthetic will smell like the real thing we remember, so there will always be a difference in any reformulated or reissued perfume. |

| Hi!! I have a bottle of Civet Oil!! I've had it since I was in college. It's the black bottle with the silver cap ( now dark silver ). I've had it on my perfume tray all these years...I'm now 53 years of age. I occasionally take the top off just to smell the fragrance. It's unbelievably divine. I wish they'd make it again. I don't use mine all all any more because it's so precious!! Those of you who've owned it know what I mean!! It's about 2/3 full...hard to say exactly...I'll have to get a flashlight and see if I shine it through the back if it will show through the black bottle. I've been selling on Ebay and I've been tempted to list it...I just can't decide. There is one listed on Ebay, though. Less than 2 days left on the bid. Hope those of you looking for this can nab the Ebay item. Good luck!! |

Hi Martha, That sounds like type of bottle that Coty made for a while. The top wasn't really cork but just looked like it. I never saw any of the Civet or Musk or Ambergris oils in that type of bottle. Usually it was patchouli or sandalwood or one of those woody scents.
That doesn't mean they didn't do it. Just that I did't see it.
The little jugs are cute. |

Hi Terrie! Boy, I've had a miserable couple of days...sinus headaches and achy all over. Feeling much better today! :-)
I've decided I'm going to hunt down some more Civet Oil...LOL!! I'm going to yard sales, garage sales, old pharmacies, etc. I live out in rural America, so maybe I'll find something. I went to a pharmacy that was going out of business and they had old baby bottles and all kinds of goodies for sale. They were still marked with the old black grease pens...5 and 10 cents!! ( But at that time I wasn't even thinking perfumes...Bummer ). So who knows...I may find something like Civet Oil on a shelf somewhere!! Any other good ideas out there...let me know!! |

Hi Carol, I'm so sorry you've been feeling poor. Glad you're better now, though. These messages are not posting in order so I hope you find this.
I can't talk on this board and can't post my info. Contact me through Ask Seller A Question on any of my auctions on Ebay. I have info for you. |

Oh, I know they will never manufacture that perfume again, but they still use civet oil from the civet cat in some perfumes and it is still available. It is kept very quiet because it's very un-PC these days to use animal derivatives. They have taught the Sri Lankans a humane way to harvest the civet oil from the cats now and they are not tormented as they once were.
And what I meant by "there will always be another one" is that someone else will always decide to auction their's off or sell it in a garage sale. :) |

| Hi Again! I saw the Civet Oil get sold on Ebay...And it was only the .33 fl. Oz. Size bottle! The bottle I have is .48 fl. Oz. I finally took a flashlight to check and see if I could find out how much is in the bottle. It cuts through the top line of the eye so it's at least 2/3 full...and that's only if they filled the bottle way up to the top when they sold it originally. Anyway, what I have in mine would probably fill the .33 fl. Oz. Size. My husband said he wouldn't think twice about selling it...He wouldn't say that about a precious tool in his workshop!! I don't know if I'll sell mine or not, but I will post on this site if I decide to. Sorry you didn't win the bid, Terrie. |

I'm not sure if my previous message went through. If it did, my apologies for the duplication.
The bottle of Civet oil that I have is differnt than what the majority descriptions I have been reading. The one that I bought in the 70's was a very small bottle (like a jug shape without the handle) and a cork for the cap. The label is still ledgible, but only reveals "Civet". |

| Hi all you Civet Oil lovers from the 1970's! I too am looking for the Civet Oil from the 1970's. (black barrel bottle with a silver top) I have tried for years and no luck. I miss it! Does anyone know for sure if it is no longer being made? Is there anything that comes close to that fabulous smell it had? Does anyone that still has some of the oil left know if the scent can be duplicated by a chemist? What can we do now to get the oil back for use? Help! |

| Re: Civet Oil From Alyssa Ashley (1970's) |
A little clarification:
Civet 'oil' is obtained from the secretions of the civet cat (not the glands themselves) and does not require killing, or hurting, the animal (although there are some producers that inhumanely cage them, mistreat them, etc.) The secretions are gathered from the rocks, edge of cages, etc., that the cat rubs against.
Musk was originally obtained from the musk *deer*, not the Musk Ox. Apparently, they could probably have removed the musk 'pods' from the deer without killing them, but this was most likely never done (I believe they are an endangered species now.)
Ambergris was *never* obtained through the slaughter of whales. Why? Because it can't be obtained through the killing of a whale. Ambergris is excreted by the sperm whale (whose numbers where massively lowered due to whaling for oil in the previous centuries - not for Ambergris). It is formed in the intestine due to irritation caused by the consumption of cuttle fish and/or squid beaks. When it is first excreted it doesn't smell like the ambergris we know - which is why no whales are killed to get it. It only truely becomes Ambergris after it has been floating in the ocean for *years*. In fact, if you find a cache of Ambergris - on the beach, floating in the ocean - count yourself lucky because you might be able to retire or purchase the house of your dreams (and yes, it is possible, though extremely rare, to find.) |

| I can't believe there are others looking for civet oil from the 70's. I got mine from my grandmother who got it as an item in a promotional pack of perfumes from Houbigant. My aunt worked in the Houbigant counter at a large department store. I, like most other people, used it up because we figured it would always be around. Unfortunately we misjudged that one, huh? I've been looking for it since I used my last drop in the 70's. Darn I can't believe its no where to be found now! Darn! Darn! Darn! I checked ebay and there's nothing there at this time...... |

Hi all, I thought I was the only one in the world looking for civet oil. I have found places that sell the oil but like you all I can't find the 70's version. I just had an idea so that's why I am posting. I am a member of a couple of Freecycle groups. I am going to post a message and see if anyone has an old bottle hanging around.....keep your fingers crossed. If any of you are not freecycle members but would like to try the same thing here is a link. Good luck, I'll keep you all posted.

| Here is a website where you can buy pure Civet oil, as well as Ambergis. Http://www.profumo.it/perfume/aromatherapy/essential_oils/civet.htm It's 58.33 Euro's which converts to about $75 USD, but worth it. Enjoy! |

I have found a few places that sell civet oil, but the oil smells horrible you need a diluted form for the "good" smell. This is what I have read, no personal experience.
Still searching.....good luck all. |

| Re: Civet Oil From Alyssa Ashley (1970's) |
| What is wrong with a world where people are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for a product that is harvested through a painful process (scraping anal glands, sometimes whipping the animal in the face until it is distressed enough to secrete this scent) from a caged animal? And how can you even consider buying this product considering you have no real way of establishing whether the animals it has been harvested from are treated humanely? Are your memories of a perfume you like more important than the suffering of these animals? The problem, as some people in this forum seems to think, is not that using the product is un-PC. The problem is that it is inhumane to use it. |

Hi All!
You can get a really good copy of Civet oil like the one that Alyssa Ashley Houbigant used to make by going to the following link:
Go to her perfumery site and order the Civet oil (copy).
This is made by a company who makes massage oils, therefore, no animal products are used!
ENJOY! |

My bottles are black with what used to be a gold cap and I also have several clear roll on type bottles with a gold cap. I LOVED IT! It was one of the best fragrances ever! |

| I am looking for the Alyssa Ashley Oil called Patchouli Oil - I bought it from the Company itself after I could no longer find it in any store or in Europe - does anyone know where this oil could be found again - it came in a small black ceramic tube type container with a silver colored screw top with plastic applicator attached - I do not know if it was called Civet Oil - the bottle just reads Patchouli Oil and it was clear in color. Thank you..... |
