Re: Ambush Perfume
New Dana Corporation shouldn't have fixed something that wasn't broke when it comes to the classic Ambush Perfume. Now, those who love the scent are forced to pay steep prices on Ebay. The new formula absolutely STINKS! Literally! They should fire their chemist and whoever came up with the brilliant idea to change the formula! Very disappointing!

I am looking to buy the original Ambush perfume that was selling in the 60's along with Canoe for men. Please, can someone tell me where I can find this. The Ambush that is being sold now is terrible. Why did they stop making such a classic perfume?

Re: Ambush Perfume
To those who are disappointed and want the original fragrance back, call (800) 822-8547. That is Dana's Customer Service department.

I talked to someone there a week ago, and when I said I'd like to request that they inform the company that I want the old Ambush back, as the new one smells horrible, she said "you and about a million other people". So, call, call, call, and maybe the message will get across.

Also, she said that if you have a bottle of the new stuff that you are unhappy with, take it back to the store and tell them that "it stinks". She said that hopefully with enough returns like that, the company will have even more incentive to listen to the consumers. And, when I told her that e-stores that have stashes of the classic Ambush were selling bottles for $95 - $100, she freaked - didn't believe me. I told her to check out ebay and see what less than full bottles were bringing, and gave her a couple of websites to check out to see what the market value of this stuff was.

Anyway, call the number and request the original...the least they could do would be to market both and label one as "Ambush Classic" or "Original Ambush".

Re: Ambush Perfume
If anybody is having a hard time finding "Ambush," and you're absolutely desperate, they do have a "vintage" Ambush Dusting Powder (by Dana) listed on ebay right now... A brand new box of it that has never been opened. I'm assuming it's the "original" scent as well... It's up for bid for only $4.99.

Just go to ebay, and under "Health & Beauty," type in "Dusting Powder" in the Search bar..... Maybe this helps a bit for someone out there??? Good Luck!

Re: Ambush Perfume
I happen to still have some original Ambush lotion, powder and a bottle of cologne. Found it at a Big Lots a few years ago. When desperate, I use Canoe. It's similar to the original ambush and has deoderant and powder. I find it at my local drugstore -- men's fragrances.

Re: Ambush Perfume
To all you die hard Ambush lovers....I totally agree about the new fragrance being awful and wanting the old one back. Of course you have to pay the high price....But here is what I found. The men's version callled Canoe, is still the same and smells exactly like the original Ambush. You can find this in many places and the price is very reasonable. I am guessing most of you Ambush lovers are in your 50's and makes you feel like a teen again....Me too. Let me know if this info helps anyone. Faye

I do not like the new Ambush cologne....it's fragrance is not at all like the original by Dana...smells like cardboard. I bought a fragrance called Yankee Clover not knowing what its' fragrance was like and it smells like the original Ambush...interesting. I like Canoe by Dana too, it smells like the original Ambush too.

Re: Ambush Perfume
I like this very much although I agree that it's not the original scent. This smells like tea, my favorite beverage. The reviewers are correct: if you're craving the original, buy Canoe, the men's cologne. It's exactly what I remember Ambush to be. Both are readily available on the internet although they've become hard to find in stores, and each is so reasonably priced that you can have both for comparison.

I loved Ambush & bought it for my grandmother every year for Christmas in the 70's.
Here is a phenomenom I have recently noticed. I now wear Tourquoise by Ralph Lauren, and after the initial strong scent fades, the scent left (for hours) on my arms smells just like Ambush! Try it..I get compliments everyday on this great perfume.

Re: Ambush Perfume
Ambush's formula should NOT have been changed. The original from the sixties was and is out of this world. I have both a bottle of original and a bottle of the 'new Dana' version here. There is no comparison. The musky original makes my eyes roll into the back of my head, and men hover over my shoulder to dreamily ask what I am wearing. Not so with the new 'schoolgirl' version of Ambush. Shame on you Dana. Bring it back! Please!!!

The same thing happened to 'My Sin' by Lanvin. I'll never smell it's original scent again. The new is not recognizable, and unfortunately, age changes the scent of original bottles from the era. Not so with Ambush, so I guess I'll have to settle for buying some that turns up on Ebay on rare occasion.

Re: Ambush Perfume
In the 60's I had discovered a wonderful fragrance called "Ambush." Which had came wrapped in foil and it's container was a glass tube with screw-on lid. Back then the price was more than reasonable for $1.00. If knew what happen in later years, in search for my Ambush. I would stocked up and bought every last one.
My question to the Dana company Why did your company let this wonderful perfume slip through and later be lost in the shuffle? This was and always will be the Best perfume ever made. They need find the original formula even someone could get a sample like they do with DNA. Why not? It's worth a shot. For all of all who is in search the Original and Best of Ambush of 60's. We must keep this running and spread the word to others what is happening here. If enough of us join together for this cause which need a miracle for a strong comeback. Tell your friends, family and call this # 1-800-822-8547. I know my friends used Ambush and was dismay at they heard from me I couldn't find Ambush anywhere.
I double that thought too to Dana It's a crime what you have done to us women who share the love of fragrance of Ambush. Oh, I'm just starting to make alot of noise cause it's the principal that the original Ambush come back and remains she belongs.

Re: Ambush Perfume
I remember the old Ambush quite well, I was "required" to buy my girlfreind a bottle every Christmas. She always smelled great! Follow this link to a good article on the history of the ownership of Ambush and other perfumes. From the sound of this article the chances of getting the old scent back is about the same as buying a 2009 Packard or Studebaker auto.

Re: Ambush Perfume
When first inquiring here about the old Ambush of the sixties, someone suggested that I order Canoe for men, as it is nearly identical to Ambush. I had ordered the 'new' Ambush and was so disappointed, as I had longed for that scent for decades. Well, I was really excited when the Canoe arrived. It WAS that wonderful scent! However, I found that if I added a light spritz of the new Ambush over it, I had the original scent in all its glory! Somehow I think when they made the new Ambush, they removed that lovely musky woodsy undertone and left only the florals. I found and ordered Canoe for a very inexpensive price in 1/2 oz. Bottles. I got four of them, have used two of them over a period of almost two years, and have enough to last quite awhile. It shouldn't be hard to find. Google 'Canoe cologne by Dana'. The Dana website might be the place to find the new Ambush, or try 'theperfumery.com'. Good luck! Hope you find it quick and are as pleased as I am!

Re: Ambush Perfume
I have a 1/2 oz. Bottle of original Ambush by Dana from the late 1950s-60s that I am willing to sell. It's the very old one with the white cap and the bottle with three gentle curves on the front of the glass. The label is slightly stained, I would say it is in fair condition. The bottle is 99.9% full - I just tried a tiny drop of it to see what it was like. The top notes are very interesting, almost lemony and it's a very unique and pretty scent. Dries down very musky. I recognize the musks as nitro-musks. They are not used in perfumery anymore, which is why people complain that the musk scents of the 1960s and 1970s don't smell the same today and they can't find anything that compares: it's because there are health concerns surrounding nitro-musks and they were fazed out in the 1980s I believe. So the musks that you find today in fragrances bear very little resemblance to the musks used in previous decades. As a perfect example, I recently scored a bottle of original Chanel No. 5 extrait from the 1940s. My lord, those musks were powerful in the vintage version and bear ZERO resemblance to the Chanel No. 5 parfum extrait that is around today, although Chanel swears the formula is the same. Today's musks just cannot compare.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in purchasing my full 1/2 oz bottle of Ambush, feel free to make me an offer. My email is: karne027@umn.edu......btw, the 0 in my email is a zero not an o. :-)

Re: Ambush Perfume
Hi Ladies,

OLD Ambush by Dana, can be found (most times) on eBay.

There is a New Version of Ambush which is VILE. I know, because I bought it not long ago - it actually made me ill. It comes in a HUGE Rounded Bottle with the name in Bold Letters
AMBUSH - so beware - it is HORRIBLE. Stick with the Old Ambush - which was sweet and lovely.

Happy Hunting!

Re: Ambush Perfume
I have used the original Ambush perfume since the 70s. When I found out they were taking it off the market, I bought up everything bottle of perfume that I could find. I am down to my last bottle and use it very sparingly. I bought a bottle of the new Ambush when it came on the market and promptly threw it away after trying it one time. It smelled like bug spray on me. I will definitely look into these vintage fragrance companies and call Dana to give them my 2 cents worth. Good luck.

Re: Ambush Perfume
Many of us already have called Dana....hasn't made a difference. I've simply gone on to find another fragrance....actually their Navy is really close. I've also found Neroli at L'Occitane fragrance stores....quite nice in terms of a substitute....not Ambush but for now it's good. Dana took Ambush off the market for whatever reason and never cared that a LOT of people liked it. The New Ambush smells like dish water gone bad. The Ambush available from warehouses does not hold a scent very long.
posted 06/06/11 by Lynnda

Re: Ambush Perfume
The original Ambush had copious amounts of obsolete nitro-musks in it. They were banned from perfumes sometime in the late 70s/early 80s...so it is simply not possible for Dana to make Ambush like they used to. The distinctive nitro-musks can no longer be used in perfumery, plus there are many other aromachemicals that were in use at the time but have since become obsolete. Dana can try halfheartedly to approximate Ambush using modern materials...but it will simply never smell the same as it once did because the ingredients in use at the time are no longer available.

posted 06/06/11 by Lynnda

Re: Ambush Perfume
Lynnda: Nitro-musks, such as musk ambrette, were synthetic musks that were widely used in classic perfumes. It was discovered that they were somewhat toxic, so they were banned. Many vintage perfumes contained nitromusks and when you compare vintage versions to modern versions you can immediately detect the absence of these nitro-musks. For example, Chanel No. 5: the original parfum extrait was heavy on nitromusks, and although the modern parfum still smells quite similar....the wallop of nitromusks is missing and the difference is noticeable. Nitro-musks had a sexy, animalic smell....more raw and raunchy than the musks used today.
